A long patience shaking case pits Roger Amero of Digby Nova Scotia against charges linked to the Watertown Boston murder of Mrs. Carlton. Barker, Portland postmaster nominee, an Oxford bear born 1839, wealthy and never in public office. first wife died in 1867, current wife is Gov. Robie’s daughter. Barker respected across parties. appointment seen as snub to Congressman Reed and may stir Portland and state politics.
The "living skeleton" Gerrison says he will contest the divorce suit brought by his wife’s father as his health improves. Separate items note a Chicago tax ruling, Gen Butler’s political stance, and various court and crime updates.
Constable Jones of Ephrata township with a posse arrested Mrs Abe Buzzard and three band members Heiney Hornberger and Breneseiser on Ephrata mountain. The arrests followed information from a Philadelphia detective who joined the group January 1 and had traveled with them since.
Senate finance committee adjourned with a tie on substituting the McPherson bill for the Aldrich measure. Senator Voorhees returned and voted for McPherson, joining Sherman and five Democrats to report the bill. The alternative plan would issue circulating notes up to bond par value with year by year reductions.
The body of Herr Lasker arrived from New York in Bremerhaven and was carried to the North German Lloyds hall where mourners gathered. Officials and mourners paid tribute as the coffin rested on a floral catafalque and a band played. Deputations escorted the remains to Berlin amid shore flags at half mast.
Selah Sprague, a 59 year old East Meadow farmer, was repeatedly struck with a fish plate by a tall mulatto burglar. Mrs. Sprague identified the assailant who fled after a failed robbery attempt. Sprague lay near the barn in a pool of blood as doctors fear fatal head injuries. The suspect is in custody in Hicksville, with a manhunt underway for a possible second burglary attempt at South Oyster Bay.
Mount Vernon Indiana January 25 Two boys Anderson 21 and Snyder 18 were hanged at noon for the August murder of James Van Weyer 17. Snyder struck the boy on the head with a comb and held him while Anderson cut his throat from ear to ear with a pocket knife. The body was thrown into the river and recovered later. Both youths confessed after interrogation.
Fire in Hyde Park tied to machinery spark igniting naphtha caused $250 damage to stock and $100 to the building. A second blaze on Albany street damaged Nos. 123, 125 and 127 owned by Joseph Brown and used by Smith & Lovett. Four story brick building burned through the roof, with total building loss $100 and patterns damaged about $500. In Albany, a morning fire damaged Leonard & Weeks, Ihane Cohen, T. Wallenstein & Co. causing about $15,000 in losses. insurers.
At a large creditors meeting for George T. Comins, prison contractor, assignees report assets of 92 530 75 and liabilities of 135 58 30. Committees to report later. Also reported in Detroit that banker Joseph Kuhl suspended with assets around 125 000 and likely higher liabilities. Cincinnati notes Isaac Fees liquor dealers owe about 124 000.
San Francisco on January 25 reports 50 police to preserve order as the boxing hero arrives to a perfect reception. About 6000 admirers greet him and 1000 men and boys follow carriages amid cheers. The Valace Hotel hosts a crowd seeking autographs, though evening attendance drops to about 4600 due to ticket speculation and sparring proving disappointing.
New York reports a mortgage for 12,600,000 filed in Brooklyn by the West Shore and Ontario Terminal Company in favor of Central Trust Company of New York. Five percent bonds payable in 1923 will be issued, secured by West Shore property. Proceeds allocate 9,000,000 for improvements and debt payment and 3,000,000 for facilities and equipment. Gen Jourdan appointed receiver of the Brighton Beach Railroad.
In the senate on Friday a bill was reported to establish a registry of deeds for Fitchburg and the towns of Lunenburg Leominster Westminster and Ashburnham within the Northern Worcester district. Petitions and orders cover education text books and probate matters while debates touch election sermons and woman suffrage.
Denver January 25 It is now learned that 59 men and boys were in the Crested Butte mine when the explosion occurred. Rescue efforts have located 34 bodies so far in chambers 1 and near the furnace, with many more yet to be recovered as gas and obstructions hinder work.
Kingston Ontario reports settlers in Frontenac and Addington rear townships face severe hunger due to halted trains after heavy snow closing the northern line. Kingston business drags, farmers stranded, merchants complain. Toronto notes record cold from 10 to 39 degrees below zero. Binghamton records 20 degrees below zero at 11 pm.

The pool terms for New York West Shore and Buffalo were under consideration, with a proposition expected today. The committee adjourned to continue discussions the next day.
