In a canal protest, Secretary Knox argues domestic shipowners should remain home and not risk foreign trade. critics label the stance presumptive while observers note U S policy aims to protect inland commerce and coastwise trade.
British protest in advance of the President proclamation on tolls is not applicable. It rests on future events unlikely to occur. Only when the United States imposes inequitable tolls on British ships will arbitration be discussed.
Secretary Knox replies to Britain's protest against Panama Canal tolls, assuring that American coastwise trade will not extend into foreign fields and that tolls will not be raised on foreign shipping to balance remissions to American vessels. M'Kinney Texas January 23 seven persons are known dead and many injured after the three story Odd Fellows building collapsed late today. The lower floor housed a dry goods and men’s furnishings shop. The death toll may rise to 40 with Mayor Finch estimating about 35 dead.
Five victims recovered from the collapse at 7 o clock and two more died at hospital. Three of the injured are thought fatally hurt. Fire cleared within an hour but rescue work continued with 21 accounted for six hours post crash. Victims include Rosa Welch and several clerks. Vernie Graves survived.
An appraisal of Professor Alexander Agassiz estate filed in New York shows total personal assets of 2 126 252 with Harvard University to receive 178 996 and the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology 200 000. The New York estate is valued at 455 465 with securities taxable in the state. Agassiz, a Newport resident, died in 1910 and was a noted scientist and explorer.

It became known yesterday that Frank W. Dupure, a University of California graduate believed connected with prominent Pacific coast figures, died by his own action by hanging in the Massachusetts Reformatory at Concord last October.
