Planning Opera by Popular Support in Boston

Director Henry Russell of the Boston Opera Company proposed a scheme to subsidize permanent grand opera in Boston through public backing. He urged 800 attendees to mobilize 30 000 people to attend performances, claiming the city could become a permanent home for grand opera. Ebene D. Jordan and others endorsed the plan, arguing opera would boost civic culture and local commerce. The event featured performances by Mme Carmen Melis and other company members, with praise from local officials and press figures.
