In Lawrence on January 24 the hoped for settlement between 20 000 strikers and mill owners collapsed as mill agents did not attend a conference at Mayor Scanlon s office. Strike leaders discussed a possible general strike that could halt nearly all New England textile production. Officials promised the mill owners’ side would continue talks.
A jewelry store window was targeted by three robbers at 78 Cambridge Street West End last night around 9 30. The jeweller fired at the trio after they tried to loot the display causing a crash of the plate glass and a burst of shots.
Max Mirkin, proprietor at 78 Cambridge Street, fired five shots as three youths robbed his display diamonds. One suspect injured a hand, all fled toward Ridgeway Lane. three men later sought treatment at Relief Hospital claiming a dog caused the wound. Police investigate names and ages of the suspects.
President Ward visits to press for fresh talent as Nationals aim to revitalize rosters. Three Braves players hold out amid negotiations. Umpire Connolly suggests a training school for umpires. New evidence reached Governor Foss late last night boosting hopes that the Executive Council will commute Silas N. Phelps from death to life imprisonment. The council meets at 10 this morning to consider the new facts.
The Boston Elevated company announced prizes for verses on street car caution. First prizes went to Florence I. Barnes and Anna Louise McCarthy. additional prize details and winners’ names follow.
Deputy Sheriff Haskins spoke firm warnings before he was killed by Phelps in the dim pre-dawn hours after ordering the suspect to surrender. The confrontation ended with Haskins fatally shot as dawn broke.

Bishop Anderson announced the Ninth Regiment should not participate in the home-coming parade for William Cardinal O Connell to maintain peace. He requested the committee to have the regiment withdraw, relieving Governor Foss over an earlier proposed directive.
Cardinal O Connell and his party are expected to reach Boston Tuesday aboard the Red Star liner Canopic, which leaves the Azores at noon today. If weather cooperates, the Canopic should arrive Tuesday morning, though recent transatlantic ships have faced bad weather and several were four days late.
