Kingston experienced two earthquakes at 2 PM on Tuesday, jarring buildings and causing widespread alarm but no injuries. The shocks followed the January 14 destruction, marking the heaviest since then.
The January 22 1907 State Department letter says the President will pay no heed to the matter of Governor Swettenham of Jamaica refusing aid from Admiral Davis. It praises British courtesy and the cordial spirit between the two governments during a time of suffering.
Theodore P. Shonts resigns as Isthmian Canal Commission chairman to become head of the Interboro Metropolitan Company in New York. The President accepts with reluctance, effective March 4, 1907, with Chief Engineer John F. Stevens likely to assume his duties and headquarters moving to the isthmus.
In Kingston on Tuesday January 22 King Edward reportedly cabled against Jamaica accepting foreign aid. Archbishop Enos Nuttall stated his disapproval if the king spoke thus, while noting Governor Swettenham’s rejection of American relief. Refugees are being aided and supplies flow from Colon and Panama. The French cruiser Jurien de la Graviere and a Haitian gunboat arrived. the Haitian offer was declined by the Governor.
Yale freshman Bucking ham Miller of Newton Highlands Mass. heroically saved Miss Jennie Toumey from drowning after a desperate ice floe incident. He fought the cold and exhaustion to pull her to safety as a relief party arrived. Miller collapsed from the chill but is expected to recover with care.
Miller and Stanley L. Gedney aided Miss Toumey after she shrieked from a Lake Whitney section. They raced across the ice to the open water where the girl disappeared and Miller leaped in without removing his skates to help.
Newton Highlands January 28 Buckingham Miller Yale freshman who rescued a girl from drowning at New Haven is 18. When he left Newton High School his parents Mr and Mrs Hiram Allen Miller worried about his frail health though he stood 6 ft 2 in tall. Tonight they celebrate his heroic deed and marvel at the effort he endured in the battle.
In seven simultaneous daytime raids in Boston Somerville and Lynn federal agents seized over 3000 lottery tickets plus paraphernalia from the Honduras National Lottery and the South American Lottery Company. No arrests were made though further action was expected.
The F. Gray Co. announces a large purchase of 5000 suits and overcoats made by Rhodes Ripley. Stock selected at 35.90 dollars. Location noted as Washington and Hanover.
New York January 23 The ongoing Thaw White tragedy turns to court with Harry K Thaw on trial for the 1906 shooting of Stanford White. The criminal court opens proceedings as 12 jurors begin weighing if Thaw acted justified emotional insanity or criminally. Jurors Deming B Smith and Charles H Fecke are sworn.
Nineteen questioned of two hundred talesmen as jurors in the Thaw case. one juror excused for private reasons. District Attorney Jerome leads the exam as architects among the questioned potential jurors face scrutiny. Both sides mostly challenge peremptorily, with questions on insanity and higher unwritten laws.
F Gray Co acquires American Pants Co in a buyout. Two thousand pairs are offered on sale today for 1.29 dollars each, with the sale located at Washington and Hanover.
