War News In Brief From Western Front And East
In the Kovel area Russians conducted two artillery strikes on enemy positions and damaged wire entanglements. French batteries disrupted troops north of the Somme near Mont St. Quentin, and a French surprise attack struck German lines toward Senomes after a bombardment. The Nanesti bridgehead and town were taken by Germans on the Berlin report, while Russians retreating across the Sereth suffered losses from outflanking fire. Except for a German trench raid near the Oise and minor Verdun patrols, the front was quiet. A daylight raid southeast of Loos bombed dugouts, inflicted casualties, and yielded prisoners for the British.
