Judge Emmons expands his crackdown beyond initial plans to a sweeping Boston campaign. Public whistling for prizes may end, while tea parlors coffee rooms smoking Turkish parlors and similar venues face police watch and possible closures. The move stirs mixed reaction across the city with many supporting and others criticizing the crusade.
In New Bedford the governor and council granted Minnie Mooney a pardon after six years in the House of Correction for the killing of her infant in 1897. Her father from New Brunswick secured the release, with the condition she return home. The pardon follows pleas by prosecutors and support from County Commissioner Bryant.
A fierce northeast gale raged along Boston Harbor forcing all ships to stay in port while snow and thick fog hampered visibility. Weather officials warned of renewed storms with rain turning to snow, as ferries struggled and fishermen reported biting winds and drizzling conditions.
Senator Hanna, who suffered a severe grip in New York weeks ago, is again ill and confined to his bed. A physician orders rest and no disturbances, though his condition is not considered serious and he is reported better tonight.
About six thousand Teamsters of Boston organized in Union 25 await the Master Teamsters Association at Hotel Essex tonight. The reading covers the yearly contract terms for 1904 including hours, overtime, holidays, wages for lumpers and drivers, and a new demand for nonunion applicants to join the union at the next meeting. The union seeks daily access for a labor representative and monthly checks of union dues in each stable.
Mrs. Edith McPherson was arrested in Mansfield on charges of arson for a farmhouse fire on June 2. She claims hypnotism by others and expressed remorse, while saying she hid after the Leahy acquittal and may face prison. she criticized others still at large.
The White River breached its banks as bridges failed across Indiana. In Indianapolis Washington street bridge is safe but nearby, and in Muncie the Indiana Union Traction Company bridge disappeared with other spans removed by floodwaters.
