Malden Jan 21 eight children aged 12 to four months and a woman in bed were saved when Morris Bazen woke his family and carried his wife downstairs then with his brother rescued the children. Smoke filled rooms but all escaped with some intoxicated by smoke. Fire started in the basement but was checked before reaching upper floors.
The Senate with out objection rejected Charles Fairbanks nomination to be pension agent at Concord New Hampshire. The New Hampshire delegation had urged the appointment but charged the move favored Secretary Taft's presidential bid and thus declined to confirm, returning the nomination to the President.
Albert Carmody of 171 Bagt Ded ham street, with a criminal history, was arrested last night by Officer James J. Macksey of Station 4 after a rimming chase. The officer fired his revolver for help and used his club on Carmody and companions after being knocked to the ground. Officer Macksey saw them force Charles E. McDonald of 7 Saxon street into a doorway at 5 Ohio street where they attempted to rob him and tried to arrest the pair.
Evelyn Thaw recounts Harry Thaw’s wild insistence on dying together after planning to take laudanum at the Waldorf Astoria. She says he claimed their lives were ruined and urged a joint suicide, but he later abandoned the plan. The exchange surfaced in Europe years later.

Grover Franklin, a Black man, was taken from Sheriff Butler and deputies and lynched but survived. Officers and citizens pursued the mob and cut him down at a tree, placing him in the county jail. Most wounds are superficial with only one serious bullet injury.
Several people were injured and two electric cars badly damaged in a three car collision on Alford street near Sullivan square last evening. A Byverett car stopped near the trolley incident, another BEv erett car followed, and an Edgeworth car bound for Sullivan square crashed into the second car. Conductor P. J. Duncan of 248 Spring street Medford was jammed between the front cars and badly hurt.
Washington acknowledged awareness of alleged ulterior designs against Admiral Evans is battleships in Rio harbor. Paris embassy relayed vague intimations to the State Department which forwarded details to Rio and the Navy. Officials noted potential damage but doubted feasibility without skilled mine laying apparatus.
