A crowd assembled on the Common and marched to Trinity Church where Dr. Alexander Mann led services and announced a collection for next Sunday. Police interrupted a planned march to Governor Guild’s home. Over 500 protesters, led by Morrison I Swift, voiced resolutions against police action and Guild, before pausing at Station 16.
In Thomaston Maine on January 19 Bucksport Smith age life prisoner died after Neal Dow Brooks age 23 an insane ward inmate struck him with an iron bar from a bedstead. Brooks boasted of plans to kill more including the physician and blacksmith overseer. Smith died five hours after the attack. Brooks had 20 year sentence for a prior assault.
New York January reports reveal the Thaw family seeks Evelyn Nesbit to recount her “horrible” story before a crowded courtroom to influence Harry Thaw’s fate. If Evelyn testifies publicly, the defense aims to show insanity claims. private testimony may be denied.
Elizabeth Guiney an 18 year old girl crawled onto Artichoke River ice with a tree branch to rescue five men who fell through during a skating rush.
