News from London reports a fresh Russian offensive east of Czernowitz on the Bukowina frontier after a brief lull following the New Year clash. Vienna had warned a second phase was near as Russian reinforcements moved into East Galicia.
Russian columns strike near Toporoutz and Boyan but are repulsed, while German forces seize trenches along the Yser. Turkish accounts claim Russian forces are in retreat in the Caucasus amid Ottoman counterattacks. Monte Negro breaks peace talks with Austria Hungary as Nicholas II’s family travels to Italy. Entente holds a London war council to plan further action. Britain reports Innocent mail is delivered. other mail is held for prize court. Russian total army casualties reach 2,535,768 in the war.

London January 19 Harold J Tennant the parliamentary under secretary for war said in the House of Commons that German casualties published to date total 2 525 768 of which 588 936 were killed. German wounded and missing numbered 1 566 549 with 356 153 captured and 2408 died from various causes.
Representative Thomas J. Giblin of Boston withdrew a filed bill calling for an inquiry into trust companies and banks. He said the bill was drawn in longhand with Tremont Trust Company noted and that its filing was for courtesy, not his support.
Firemen battled a half hour blaze in a tin-sheathed building at South Market and Commerce streets last night. Damage was about 2500 dollars with several firms affected. H. D. Malone Company suffered the heaviest loss. Cause is unknown.
