Judge Aiken Opens as Chief Justice in 1900s Era
On his first official day Chief Justice John A. Aiken received praise and bouquets while settling a mix of small human interest cases. Aiken, praised as a keen listener, is noted for decisive rulings and Holmes like demeanor. A wag at the bench, he declined to use his full name on court attest. The piece also covers Frederick W. Peabody proposing a whipping post for wife beaters, arguing imprisonment fails to deter abuse and detailing his bill aims and statements.
