Rigor of the Game Opens New England Whist Championship

The New England Whist Association midwinter tournament began at the Hotel Vendome with Howell open pair matches won by Mrs. W. G. Sergeant and R. M. Jenks, and later by Mrs. C. S. Waterhouse and J. C. Brimblecum. Ward and Perkins edged ahead in trick scores and the 7:30 Mitchell system ties led to north south and east west divisions. Greek defendant sues arresting officers in Lowell case

James Panagakas a Greek sues Daniel Bugbee and Patrolman Euric Leighton for 240 dollars each. He was arrested last June by Leighton on Bugbee’s instigation, charged with assault. Panagakas was convicted in Police Court and fined, then discharged on appeal in Superior Court.

A Paine Memorial Hall French ball crowd barely avoided panic when a gallery streamer touched a gas jet, catching fire. Two officers restrained the crowd as a deputy and others stamped out the flames, and dancing resumed amid the mishap with a lively, if spectatorship heavy, atmosphere.

Domestic dispute ends with stabbing as Casso is injured

Antonio Casso, drunk at 2 Lans court rear of 221 and 223 North street, berates his niece and fights with neighbors. A hammer breaks a door panel during the struggle, Casso is stabbed in the left side and identifies Vito Tasone of 222 North street as the assailant at the police station. Raffaele Comito of 88 Charter street was also stabbed in the head by an unknown person. Tasone is in custody.

A lively ball described as under the Societe de Culinare devolved into a bacchanal with police and Watch and Ward Society officers present. Attendees in yellow shoes and fancy dress filled the hall while thirst and flirtation ran rampant amid staged bulletins and chaotic dancing.

John Little, a local lightweight wrestler, defeated James Gilligan of Lawrence in a best two of three catch-as-catch-can series in Brockton. The first bout lasted 1 hour 28 minutes 35 seconds, the second 40 minutes, with Gilligan nearly securing a throw in the final bout before Little escaped and threw Gilligan twice.

Gloucester Aldermen push vote on new city charter

At the January 19 meeting the Gloucester Board of Aldermen passed an order to petition the Legislature for permission to resubmit the new city charter. Charles Cressey was appointed water commissioner for three years and confirmed. Water commissioners seek $200,000 for extending the water plant.
