George N Swallow Considered for Wells Place in City Hall Battle

Charlestown born George N Swallow, a prominent wholesale grocer and Republican leader, is favored to be named superintendent of streets by Mayor Hart as factions clash over Wells’s successor. Swallow would join a field including George Morrill Bertram Wheeler and Frank Foster. Swallow’s acceptance remains contingent on a formal offer. The mayor plans a decision early next week and to appoint seven deputies soon after.

Helgoland Wreck Reaches St Johns After Fire Sightings

The tug Ingraham returns to St John s Newfoundland from the wreck of the Helgoland in St Mary s Bay. A diver reports the steamer a shapeless mass of iron sails and cordage. Only the foremast remains standing and no bodies have been recovered.

Young Dorchester Boys Held Over South Africa Plan

Three 12 year old Dorchester boys Florence J. Curley Fred C. Ritchie and Arthur George Craig were detained by Quincy police. They carried extra clothing two loaded 22 caliber revolvers and a plan outline to first strike Indians in the West then sail to San Francisco and head to Ladysmith. They will be sent home.

Tragic Axe Murder Suicide Shocks Reed West

Martin Bergen famed Boston catcher killed his wife and two children with an axe at his Reed West Brookfield home and then slit his throat. The grisly discovery was made by Michael Bergen, the father, who found the scene after visiting for milk and noting the closed curtains and absence of life.

Hart Arrested in Somerville Theft Case at 8 PM

Frank Hart of Somerville was arrested at Washington and Beach streets last evening about 8 o'clock accused of stealing a watch and chain valued at $25 from Joseph T. Moody of Lynn just before the arrest. The property was recovered and Hart locked up.

Tugela Passage Report and Frightful Bombardment

A Pretoria despatch reports the Tugela passed Buller feint toward Colenso to mask river moves. At Swartz Kop ridge at daybreak a siege gun battery opened fire and five heavy naval guns fired simultaneously on our trench, described as the most frightful bombardment witnessed on land.

British Capture German Vessel Miarie near Delagoa Bay

The German bark Miarie, sailing from Australia with flour for the Transvaal government, was seized as a prize by the British cruiser Pelorus near Inyak Island in Delagoa Bay and sent to Durban with a prize crew aboard.

A late Buller despatch says General White's Ladysmith garrison sortieed to strike Boer forces in the rear to aid the relieving forces. The Daily Mail reports heavy firing near Ladysmith yesterday forenoon as the relieving force and besieged camps close to within about twelve miles. Buller's bombardment of Boer positions continued all day.
