In Wakefield a brilliant wedding unites Dr. Cyrus Faulkner Carter of Boston and Henrietta Wartshorn Beebe at the Congregational Church with a reception at John F. Hartshorn's home. The couple will reside at 28 Beacon Street, Boston after a tour. Other society weddings follow in North Adams and Lovett with notable guests and travel plans.

Briary Jan 18 The Reichstag committee passed the Landwehr provisions of the military bill and set a second ban service period enabling men entering active service before twenty to leave Landwehr earlier. War Minister Von Schellendorf said the measure adds nearly 700000 trained men in war, cost 80000000 to 100000000 marks. The Russian government renews anti German measures in Livonia as 40 Lutheran clergymen lose benefices for German-only services. Proclamations circulate urging Poles to rise as Polish exiles in France and Italy grow stronger. Diplomatic circles note small reductions in Imperial Guards strength. Vienna and Budapest press comment on peace desires and Bulgaria’s future changes.
Suaki reports Osman Digna’s force was attacked and driven off by friendly tribes. Rebels later rallied and forced the tribes to retreat. Colonel Kitchner and Major McMurdo were wounded. Six friendly natives were killed and twenty wounded. Rebel losses were heavy.
W E Yarding writes that the Smith Kilrain fight was authentic citing expert witnesses and judges who praised the bout. He notes Kilrain injured his hand in round four and argues the 2% hour duration was not unusual, citing longer matches like Sayers versus Poulson.
New York reports that beginning January 23 general passenger agents of trunk lines agreed all free baggage up to 150 pounds per passenger will be checked through to Pacific coast points. Excess baggage must be rechecked at the Missouri River as before.
Treasury Department reports that several convicts released at New Caledonia are en route to the United States via California. Customs and immigration officials in San Francisco have been alerted to intercept and prevent their landing.

Entries include ships such as Britannia Calcutta Philadelphia Moravia New York Hamburg Chateau Leoville for Bordeaux and La Gascogne Havre Donati Rio de Janeiro City of Washington Mexico and more.
A New York report says a French syndicate through Jere Abbott & Co of Boston has secured Lake Superior copper for three years. Abbott refused comment as copper prices drift upward and bears face pressure from the potential buyers.
A new Democratic daily newspaper with strong administration aims to start in Chicago. Horace A. Hurlbut hints at a forthcoming paper to influence the presidential campaign, while W. C. Goudy is poised to lead editorial direction as the venture unfolds.
A large blaze at Albina in Portiano Oregon destroyed the Northern Pacific Terminal Company round house machine and blacksmith shops. Loss estimated at 45000 with 25000 insured. The American Iron and Steel Association reports 1887 US pig iron output at 6,417,148 gross tons, the highest in history, with 22 states and one territory producing iron. The year shows a gain of 738,819 tons over 1886, and only 301,444 tons remained unsold at year end.
Claims arising from the Bradford accident are being settled promptly by the railroad company for reasonable losses. Few fraudulent claims have appeared. railroad officers pursue fair demands while scrutinizing bogus bills. Total accident costs remain uncertain.

Furnacemen have banked furnaces and await developments while saying production and sale at present prices is untenable. The Dunbar and Charlotte furnaces are closed as coke price falls twenty five cents per ton without ore or freight rate changes.
William Selby former senior partner of Selby & Co. paper makers and stationers was arraigned on forgery charges in Toronto. He allegedly signed Taylor Bros. to a promissory note for 85000 and faces two additional forgery counts for 4000 and 1500, totaling 15688. He was remanded for a week with bail set at 10000 in two sureties.
The Citizens' Association of South Boston marked its anniversary at Gray's Hall 619 Broadway with about 180 prominent locals in attendance. Speakers included Charles J. Noyes A W Beard Ex Senator Jenkins Alderman Kelly A C Whitney and others while F E Goodrich of the Post responded to a toast. Ex Councilman Lawton Alderman Romwich and several others were present as Mendelssohn quartet provided music.
At a Boston gathering last evening the Boston Paper Trade Association held a regular meeting at the Parker House. Ex Lieutenant Governor Byron Weston attended as special guest with speeches by Charles H. Yates and others. Vice President J. P. Higgins presided and Hartshorn's orchestra provided dinner entertainment. Moreston spoke on unionism of the trade and noted ledger paper menus he printed in 1583. Out of town members included A. The National Tobacco Association met in Washington on January 18 and decided to take no immediate action due to undeveloped congressional views. A watch committee was appointed to monitor any tax moves. A prominent member cited support for a nominal two cent tax to protect trade and compensate labor, with a large majority favoring removal of leaf tobacco sale restrictions if the tax is reduced.
The National Board of Trade began its annual convention in Washington with Frederick Fraley reelected president and Hamilton A. Hill secretary. Debates covered adulteration of food and spurious lard labeling, plus resolutions urging stronger coast defense, river and harbor improvements, and clearer US jurisdiction to remove obstructions, adjourned until tomorrow.
At Harrissure Pennsylvania on January 18 the Democratic State central committee chose Elliot P. Kisner of Luzerne county as chairman over Dallas Sanders of Philadelphia, with 42 votes to 35 and 1 for Robert E. Wright. The body endorsed President Cleveland’s administration and policy in his latest message.
The three masted schooner Ida A Latham from Boston to New York anchored by the breakwater near New Haven to weather a gale. A anchor chain broke, the vessel drifted ashore three miles below Merwin's Point, the crew sought shelter at a farm where they faced cold and rough treatment, then made for the Sailors' Home in New Haven. The vessel lies off the rocks as search efforts continue. captain Thatcher dispatched the tug Rambler, no further word yet. The Latham carries $15,000 in value. crew members include Mate Young from Wellfleet and Steward Harry Chase from West Harwich, Mass.
A banquet at Pythian Hall welcomed Henry O. Billings, a large straw manufacturer, as South Framingham business leaders praised his enterprise. His factory burned on December 2, 1857, but was rebuilt in three weeks, a feat celebrated by over 200 attendees. A candy miniature of the four story plant was lit and set ablaze during the evening. The event ended past midnight with remarks from the host and guests.
Des Moines Jan 18 The Iowa Legislature met in joint session at noon and declared James F Wilson elected United States Senator for a six year term starting March 1889.
