A stiff icy west wind fanned a blaze in Gloucester causing total loss of four Perkins Box Company and George H. Perkins & Sons buildings, damage to two schooners Eugenia and Oriole, one yacht, and one dwelling. Estimated total loss ranges from 140000 to 160000 dollars.
The German submarine U-3 with 30 men aboard sank in Kiel harbor due to accidental water bunker flooding. Salvage ship Vulkan arrived and secured the sub, lifting one end above water after quick chain deployment.

George E. Harris, 19, of New York City was captured on Summer street Somerville by Charles Caldwell of the Somerville High football team with help from his brother Edward Caldwell.
