In Plymouth England January 16 two officers and nine enlisted men of the British submarine A-7 are trapped aboard their vessel beneath the sea. Continued on page six.
The Rev. William F. Lyons, pastor of Sacred Heart Church on Boston Street, West Lynn, was attacked by a burglar late last night as he investigated a mysterious light seen through church windows in the vestibule.
Father Lyons startled by a light in the snow seen through a stained window. A burglar attacked with a heavy flashlight, escaped by a rear window jumping 20 feet. Two policemen pursued, tracking footprints for over a mile before losing them on Bernice street. Stolen funds from two poor boxes. It is believed the suspect fled toward Saugus.
Twenty three Sunbury High School seniors were injured in a collision between a wagon carrying students and a trolley car on a bridge between Sunbury and Northumberland. Three were reported seriously hurt.
Charges against Medical Examiner George B. Magrath were filed with Governor Walsh. The governor has not yet named the examiner, with opposition delaying the appointment.
Three charges have been made against Dr Magrath by assistants with Governor Walsh weighing the case. The charges were sent to Lieutenant-Governor Barry, who passed them to the governor. If true, Magrath may be replaced. if not, Walsh may reappoint him.
Jeremiah Maloney and Mrs Catherine Maloney of Bradstreet and Summer streets Beachmont died within 24 hours of each other. They will be buried in a double funeral at Our Lady of Lourdes Church Beachmont Sunday at 7 PM. Mrs Maloney died Thursday night at 6 40 and Mr Maloney died Friday afternoon at 1 45.
The Boston mayor, Fitzgerald, is urged by sources to become chairman of the Finance Commission with Governor Walsh awaiting formal action. Sullivan’s term ends, and Fitzgerald declines any elective run, stating his duty remains in Boston while planning a future development venture.
Severe earthquake shocks hit Tarumiza and Ōshine in Ozumi province across Kagoshima Bay. Residents fled in terror as many houses collapsed and crevasses opened. Sakura-jima volcano remained inactive. Casualties reported in scattered towns.
Massachusetts Public Service Commissioner Anderson denounces New Haven publicity claiming the road’s finances were misrepresented as “absolutely false and vicious.” He cites newspaper circulation from News Bureau with inflated asset figures and stock sales following the reports. Commissioner Bar on discusses 599 815 copies sent at New Haven's order and related payments.
Louis D. Brandeis will not accept the city auditor position announced by Mayor-elect Curley in Washington. Curley plans to reorganize auditing to leverage tax discounts and asks Brandeis to supervise the work. Brandeis, contacted by telegram, replied simply that he would not accept the post.
The revenue cutter Woodbury towed the four masted schooner Northland three miles south of Matinicus light after a weekend storm. The vessel had sails blown away and heavy leakage, with rigging damaged and crew badly frostbitten. The Northland reported being in company with a five masted schooner earlier, per the captain.
