Sea Knock Captain Off the Bridge

The British steamer Avala from Fowey to Boston encountered a hurricane January 10 and returned to Queenstown in a disabled state arriving today. The rudder was broken, boats washed away, the deck wrecked. Captain Frank Land was knocked from the bridge and suffered fractured ribs. five seamen were injured and taken to hospital. The ship will be docked for repairs.

Steamer Almerian Abandoned by Crew and Towed to Queenstown

The British steamer Almerian from Galveston and Newport News bound for Liverpool reached Queenstown crippled after severe gales. A big sea killed a sailor, wrecked steering, and damaged hatches. Lord Erne towed her on Jan 12 but lines snapped, forcing abandonment of the tow.
