Fire gutted a south end tenement leaving six families near death. Morris Rincowsky rescued his wife and two children then re entered the building and had to jump from a window marked A. William Setter escaped with his wife from a window marked B.
Fire gutted a six family building at Seneca street and Harrison avenue in the South End. One man jumped three stories and broke a leg while others escaped across the roof and through smoke filled hallways. Three alarms sounded as investigators probe possible arson with state fire marshal involvement.
Fire started in the dry goods store run by David Walter on the building’s street floor. Four of the six families were newlyweds within two months. All lost furnishings and none had insurance. several occupants narrowly escaped as flames spread after a 9:30 discovery. An explosion tore windows and the metal ceiling free, a police inspection suggesting the blast was a consequence, not the cause, of the fire. Neighbors gave shelter to the homeless households.
