About 600 people visited the Boston Post office seeking recovery of funds from Provident Securities and Banking Company. Meyer Bloomfield, chairman of the depositors protective committee, said the outlook is pessimistic and urged avoiding false hopes for savers.
Mr Bloomfield and Mr Eastman led yesterday’s inquiry into civil action possibilities. They report Shenandoah Irrigation Company stock was exchanged for Provident stock, with Charles D Gurley identified as a leading promoter. Hon C W Bartlett argued Ford case saying the officer would resign from the Bar Association rather than re sign from defending it. Witnesses including Lieut Frohock and Patrolman Gallivan testified of attempts to use Ford for promotion in exchange for money. Ford admitted being approached but said he refused any involvement and knew nothing of a man named Johnson or Dowd. Judge reserved decision.
The deadlock over the election of chairman remains unresolved after yesterday's meeting. Five ballots were cast with five votes the highest any candidate could muster, an administration gain of one vote from last week. Five Democrats each received a total of five votes, while the source of the remaining two votes remains uncertain, signaling the stalemate may persist for some time.
The five aldermen Fitzgerald Kneeland Baldwin Cauley Curley and Hennessy voted for each other across five ballots. On the Republican side Alderman Draper maintained the same strength noted earlier on Page 10.
A Brookline romance that began in theater sparked a surprise marriage. Rosamond A. Brockway of 81 Stearns Road and Arthur H. Sawyer of 146 Massachusetts Avenue were linked by love scenes at the Criterion Dramatic Club. A marriage license found at Town Hall shows the wedding occurred on Saturday.
Miss Martha Brockway daughter of Mrs. Brockway and Mr Sawyer longtime club president wed in Brookline after a private ceremony at the bride’s sister home. The couple developed affection during acting scenes in the Criterion Club with Rev Oliver D. Sewall officiating at Harvard Congregational Church ceremony.
The school committee voted to discontinue the corps of permanent substitute teachers and reduce special teachers, saving about $4800 yearly. It also plans to dismiss all evening school assistants where attendance is below required levels, with principals to file weekly reports. A state appropriation request for the Boston Normal School and longer terms for supervisors were discussed, with a special meeting set to hear supervisor sentiment.
