A report notes a conference held in New York today on supply issues as Boston area schools rush to secure coal. Officials from city departments discussed allocation and transportation to ensure fuel for the upcoming winter term.
Citizens with objections to opening and closing hours of industries should appeal to R B Stone at 50 State Street. Stone was appointed as local coal conservator yesterday. Fuel Administrators Storrow Wiggin and Potter plan talks in New York to oppose three day weekly shutdowns for nonessentials.
Mrs May Alden Ward noted New England author and philanthropist died instantly when her car collided with an electric streetcar at the crossing of Charles River road and Brookline Street in Cambridge.
Mrs. Ward aged 65 returns from visit with Mrs. Wheeler of 55 Garden street Cambridge to 19 Charles River Square Back Bay. Chauffeur William J. Thompson of 73 Batavia street Boston drives at 5 40 p m down Charles River Parkway toward Boston. An electric car on Cottage Farm bridge toward Central Square Cambridge strikes the limousine, destroying the vehicle and wrecking its front.
The Florida Seaboard Air Line announces new daily departures from Washington D C effective January 13. Trains to Atlanta and Birmingham depart Washington at 9 30 a m and 6 00 p m with additional service at 1 15 p m. Reservations and information at 282 Washington Street phone Main 2622.
In Parliament Sir Auckland Geddes announced Britain's man power plan stating nearly 500000 young men will be drafted into the army at the earliest date. More recruits may follow as months pass. He noted exemptions for essential industry workers may be lifted to bolster wartime needs.
The minister outlines the status and needs of British fighting and munitions forces after an agreement with labor leaders to recruit skilled workers with exemption when conscription was adopted. The empire has enrolled 7,500,000 battalion forces and now has over 4,000,000 enrolled, but seeks more men until American strength arrives.
Mrs. H. D. Heathfield led the 23d annual meeting of the Woman's Seaman's Friend Society at Old South Church, calling for portable huts at civil hospitals for navy men during convalescence. She noted discharged patients lack home convalescence and proposed huts as recreation spaces, citing success at Massachusetts General and Cambridge hospitals and a campaign to raise funds.
An old ad claims higher death rates from colds and pneumonia and promotes Fr. John’s Medicine as a preventive. The fragmentary notice presents health scare language and a product pitch.
Frederick L. Small former Boston broker was hanged at the New Hampshire State Prison for the Ossipee murder of his wife Florence Arlene Small in September 1916. He offered only God’s will be done after learning Governor Keyes denied his reprieve.
Small, in black with pressed pantaloons, walked to the death chamber after a 18 day wait. He dined at 6 15 pm on bread and butter cold meat prune sauce and milk. Sheriff Chandler and the Christian Science adviser joined him as the warrant was read and he entered the chamber at midnight. Witnesses included prison staff physicians and county medical referees from Carroll Merrimac and Mountain View counties.
Frederick L. Small, a former Boston broker, was found guilty of first degree murder in Ossipee New Hampshire for the Sept 29 1916 murder of his wife Florence Arlene Small. The case involved a burned cottage on Lake Ossipee and a fatal beating shooting and strangling. Small was sentenced to be hanged after midnight Jan 15 1918 and received no reprieve.
Major Augustus Peabody Gardner of the 121st Infantry and former congressman from Massachusetts died at Camp Wheeler base hospital after a brief pneumonia illness. His wife Mrs. Gardner, who had been at his bedside, collapsed upon learning of his death and was moved to a hotel where she received care.
A major contracted a severe cold at the rifle range two weeks ago leading to pneumonia. His body will be sent to his former home in Hamilton after Senator Lodge arrival from Washington, father of Mrs. Gardner.
Victor Davidonia aged six and a half was crushed by an Ideal Market truck while coasting on Garden Street Hill. His nine year old brother Paul escaped with a facial cut as the sled and truck collided. Victor died at General Hospital on the hill.
In Indianapolis the United Mine Workers biennial convention opens with a key issue the ratification of Washington agreements giving substantial wage increases to miners in bituminous and anthracite fields. The deals run through April 1, 1920, and despite talk of opposition no failure to endorse the officers’ action is expected.
A locomotive and 30 freight cars derailed after speeding down Crawford Notch at 60 mph near Bemis New Hampshire. The engineer was killed and the fireman and a brakeman seriously injured in the crash just below the station.
Frederick Powers of Bartlett New Hampshire was killed instantly when a Maine Central freight train derailed at Crawford station on the Mountain division. Rene Pinard of St Johnsbury Vermont was seriously injured and Oscar Clements of Bartlett was badly hurt after a crash caused by defective brakes and icy rails. The engine plunged from the track into a meadow near Nancy Brook dragging several cars as the derailment occurred on a steep grade.
The American Red Cross appeals for nurses to volunteer for home cantonments and France hospital work. New England aims to supply 2500 trained nurses with a reserve organization formed at once. Miss Elizabeth Ross, Bureau of Nursing Service, New England Division, at 755 Boylston Street, directs registration.
Mrs. Jennie May Eaton Ainsworth, once acquitted in the 1913 Plymouth murder case of Rear Admiral Joseph Giles Eaton, was arrested in Guilford, Connecticut, on a secret indictment from Norfolk County Massachusetts. She faces charges of abandoning her four month old grandson in Brookline on September 12, alleged to have led to the infant's death.
Berlin dispatches say Count von Hertling may resign as imperial chancellor amid a growing political crisis. Illness is cited, but informed circles claim he is being forced out by pan Germanists and annexationists clashing with liberals favoring negotiated peace without annexations or indemnities.
An assertion that Berlin junkers feared Bolshevik propaganda has materialized as Russian Socialist doctrines take root among German masses, claiming widespread influence among the people.
A Chelsea bound tunnel car struck a coal truck owned by Revere Coal Company at Pearl and Marginal streets in Chelsea. Five men on the truck Samuel J Wakeham Ralph Keyes William Rice James Rice and Joseph F Mitchell were taken to Frost Hospital with collisions and sprains.
Mrs. Joanna M Mumzell, 52, of Roxbury, leapt under a tunnel train in the Summer street subway. She told a hospital intake she wanted to die before naming her identity, later identified by her son George Mumazeit, then died after suffering severe injuries including the loss of a foot. Motorman Lacy applied brakes as passengers cried out. the woman was removed from between cars and rushed to the Relief Hospital.
