Richmond January 14 1900 T J Cluverius was hanged at 1 08 PM for the murder of Miss Fannie L Madison dying without confession. He maintained innocence to the end while a singer Captain Frank W Cunningham sang and asked if he believed in Christ before execution. He walked to the scaffold without emotion as a large crowd watched in the jail yard.

In Indianapolis on January 14, the House unseated Magher a Democrat replacing him with Dickerson a Republican for ineligibility as a justice of the peace. The move leaves both parties with seventy five votes on the joint ballot and the Republican caucus renominated Senator Harrison.
A. Howard Hinkle of Cincinnati has sued Mrs. Jeanette M. Thurber in New York to recover 12000 plus interest from December 4 for money advanced on November 27 to Charles E. Locke, manager of the National Opera Company, guaranteed by Mrs. Thurber.
London jan 14 Mr John Bright declines an invitation to join federation advocates. He argues Canada would yield to the U S if independent and that without a Canadian Dominion the dispute would be settled by England’s concessions. He blames the federation for jingoism and urges letting the question rest.
A nesting of six boilers exploded at engine house No 20 on the Delaware and Hudson Railroad near Fairview Hawley Weed the engineer and Perry Parsons the fireman were fatally injured The engine house was wrecked and the cause remains unknown
Vienna reports the ministry of war will summon several reserve classes in February instead of April as planned. Large contracts have been set for military equipment. Bern notes a St. Petersburg letter says Germany and Russia relations have strengthened while Austria and Russia must settle issues not entirely tied to Bulgaria.
Jack McAuliffe of New York defeats Harry Gilmore of Boston in twenty eight rounds to win the Holske belt at the event in Lawrence.

Vienna Jan 14 reports Russia has proposed Prince Nicholas of Mingrelia as Bulgarian throne heir if his regency demands gain broad support. Count Peter Schonevaloff presented the plan in Berlin as negotiations continue on the Bulgarian settlement.

In Rockland on January 14 Isaac W Sprague known as the living skeleton died. Dr W E Whitney of Harvard led the autopsy with several medical examiners. The body weighed forty pounds. Autopsy found muscular atrophy and severe spinal curvature. Pneumonia diagnosed as the cause of death. Parts of the spinal column were sent to Harvard for microscopic study.
Milwacker Wis Jan 14 The Rev John Patterson pastor of the Presbyterian Church Cambridge Wisconsin cut his throat with a razor and is in a precarious condition at St Marys Hospital He is 40 years old and suffers mental aberration from a sunstroke last summer He has a large family
The Jersey City riot over coal shortages left injured workers and a man dead at Roosevelt Hospital. Police searched for an assailant, while Delaware & Hudson and Reading Railroad officials faced pressure to keep coal moving as 15,000 workers stayed idle.
A delegation led by Joe Harrison of the new Longshoremen's Association attempted to halt work on the bark Sarah at Sixth Street. A melee erupted with knives and pistols. two men were shot and one stabbed, though none face likely fatal injuries. No arrests reported.
About 2500 workers at P Lorillard's tobacco plant struck over a 25 cent cut per 1000 pounds and pay reductions from 9 to 6 for weekly workers. Remaining staff, about 1000, quit. total 3500 employees idle. The firm cites refusal to negotiate with delegation. The plant to close until workers return.
The firm states it has a large stock of tobacco and can fill all orders for the next six months. A reserve force of police officers is kept at police headquarters ready for emergencies.

Curcaco reports August Spies under death sentence plans marriage next Tuesday to Mina Clarke Van Zandt daughter of a well off chemist. She met him at the trial and is described as good looking and intelligent.
The New England League of Base Ball Clubs met at the Parker House with President Knox presiding. Delegates from Haverhill Brockton Manchester Boston Portland Lowell and Lawrence discussed measures, all but T J Lynch’s appointment as umpire were laid on the table for future consideration.
The Charlestown Veteran Volunteer Firemen's Association held its third annual ball in Monument Hall Charlestown with large attendance and a pleasant evening. Officers include George Wiley president B Y Dennis vice president Thomas P Smith secretary and J J McCarthy treasurer.
In Wyandotte Kansas the jury failed to reach a verdict against George Hamilton over the train wrecking accusation and he was remanded for a new trial. Elisha Bassett of Charlemont was fined $20 plus costs by Justice Green of Greenfield for cutting the hind leg cords of four sheep to stop them from jumping, at the complaint of James Anderson, western counties agent of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
