City of Mexico reports a February 1 start under a contract signed by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe rail road attorney and the Mexican interior minister. From Guaymas Gulf terminal of the Sonora railroad, a steamer will fly the American flag to east of California ports carrying Mexican and American mails. Vessels previously sailed irregularly under the Mexican flag. The line will reach San Francisco quarterly, connecting with Pacific mail steamers at Acapulco for San Francisco.
At Portland Oregon yesterday a violent brawl broke out aboard the British bark Craig Mullen near the flour mill dock after nine drunken sailors from the Chilena boarded. Second Officer Williams was struck and wounded as handspikes were used for about 15 minutes. The deck was stained with blood and several sailors may die from their injuries.
In Calhoun county Baingridge report two men Jo Shuman and Thomas Ginn dueled over an old quarrel on a road. Ginn’s son rode behind his father. Shuman fired first, both men fired until they emptied revolvers. Shuman died after four wounds, Ginn was wounded thrice but survived. The boy witnessed the duel from a nearby fence corner.
In Mapp bury Vermont on January 14 a resolution introduced by J P Ray Hewleys MWY secretary of the New York Sheep Breeders association passed unanimously. It urges Congress to raise customs duties on Australian wools to prohibit their importation into the United States after noting Australia banned merino sheep imports and destroyed cargos despite quarantine and inspection.
KALTIMORA Jan 14 Thos J Meehan Co bought the entire three pound standard tomato block from the Northern Hartford association. The sale covered 60 600 to 76 000 cases at 15 cents per dozen. The firm also bought about 10 009 dozen sugar carnal at 86 cents per dozen. The purchase was unprecedented in size and left no sizable stock on the market.
The News Dallas special reports a rumor that the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe system may soon come under control of the Union Pacific network, with plans to connect it to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe via a new line from Allus connecting with the Atchison road.
PINGHAMTON New York January 14 Menken the Kimira murderer has broken tail and fled. The fugitive wears a tight green suit black derby hat shoes with brown cloth tops and no overcoat. He is about 5 ft 7 in tall sandy complexion with a cast in his eyes. A mous tache and short side whiskers of sandy color. He is a German and speaks English brokenly.
Baltimore January 14 William H Graham of Alexander Brown and Sons reported dying of Brights disease. Miss Edgar a Jerome Bonaparte stepdaughter has entered the Convent of the Visitation at age 19 to devote life to religion.

San Francisco reports that the 1854 wine product totaled 25 million gallons. Projections for 1885 place production no lower than 40 million gallons and possibly as high as 79.09 million. Quality is said to be considerably better than in prior years.
Ouronco January 14 report states grain rates from Chicago to New York have been cut by two cents per bushel, with the reduction applying east of Buffalo over the Delaware Lackawanna and Western railroad.
The North Adams fire district voted Tuesday to issue 30,000 dollars in bonds to fund a new water supply. The bonds run for thirty years with a rate near four percent, and the plan aims to improve municipal water service in Springfield Massachusetts.
