President Roosevelt praised the selection of Abbott Lawrence Lowell as Harvard University president designating him successor to Eliot. Lowell, Eaton professor of government, will assume duties after overseers ratify the corporation's choice next Wednesday amid Harvard bylaws and possible rejection.
The Board of Aldermen failed to elect a chairman at a special meeting yesterday, the fifth meeting this year. Eight ballots were cast with the same outcome as before. Alderman O'Hare voted for Alderman Timilty instead of Whelton, while Alderman Donnelly was absent.

D B Needham of a wealthy Boston family escaped Worcester asylum and later detectives before being held in Mantel Marion County as a suspected Ohio Central railway station robber. His brother in law G W Capon of Boston announced Needham became unbalanced after losing fortunes in the South and was committed to Worcester.

Indianapolis dated Jan 14 General Benjamin S Shively won the United States Senate seat for Indiana on the 18th ballot after a tough contest. His main rival was John W Kern former Democratic Vice Presidential nominee. Shively began in the 48th Congress and was reelected thrice, later running for governor in 1896 and again securing the Democratic vote for senator in 1908 and 1905.
President Roosevelt rode 98 miles today and returned to the White House after more than 17 hours away. He did not show signs of weariness and appeared alert at the door.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt mounts Roswell for a 90 mile round trip to Warrenton Virginia and back through sleet and darkness. He is joined by Dr. Rixey Carey Grayson and Captain Archibald Butt as relays of horses pace the long ride.
The British steamer Matteawan, which had sailed from Pensacola Tuesday with 10,000 bales of cotton for Havre, returned today with a fire in her hold. The cargo is valued at 500,000 dollars and damage is expected to be heavy.

Cardenio Flavius King a financial promoter and newspaper man was sentenced by Judge Schofield to 10 to 14 years in prison with the first day in solitary confinement. He began serving the term in Charlestown after a nearly three hour hearing where King pleaded for mercy. His attorney Herbert Parker sought a stay of sentence arguing lack of a specific crime by the jury, but the court overruled.
The court denied a stay of sentence for King the broker as he spoke for over an hour from the witness stand detailing how he came to sentence day. He blamed Thomas W. Lawson and claimed an organized system was involved. District Attorney Dwyer opposed delaying the transfer to state prison and King departed with his son and attorneys after the pronouncement.

In Quincy on January 13 an explosion at Fore River Shipbuilding Co. killed Charles Bergstrom and seriously injured three others. Ex Commodore Davidson, U. S. N., along with C. Berdell and Patrick Glemm suffered bruises and cuts. The blast damaged faces and bodies as it could be heard mile away.
