Samuel Lewis, infamous lender known as the greatest and meanest of modern Shylocks, has died in London on January 13. His career sparked wrecked lives and shattered hopes as his harsh practices drew public ire and sensational press coverage.
Reports say Boers launched an attack on Kaalfentein Station as peace agents attempted to intervene. Casualties and damage are not yet confirmed. Local authorities increased security and urged calm while awaiting fuller details.
A profile of Sam Lewis labeled the world’s most notorious money lender. He preyed on noble and titled clients including the Dukes of Marlborough and Manchester, using usury schemes and forged notes. His Cork Street office resembled a respectable solicitor firm, and his network included youthful satellites and astonished aristocrats.

The British suffered no casualties.
A dozen members of Congress and Senators toured Boston from sunrise to a late-evening trip starting at South Station. They visited Paul Revere’s home, Christ Church, Bible of Cotton Mather, navy yard with the Constitution and Olympia, met Admiral Sampson, and viewed Bunker Hill and major city landmarks before a dinner at the Quincy House.
Newport January 13 with decorations finished the Vanderbilt and Elsie French wedding plans near completion. About 150 guests from church to houses will travel by carriage after the ceremony. William K. Vanderbilt and Chauncey Depew arrived as standby arrangements, with The Breakers at Ochre Point hosting guests and rehearsals at St. Joan's Church.
The Vanderbilt and French families choose Zabriskie Memorial Church of St. John the Evangelist in Newport for the ceremony a Monday wedding. Floral arrangements feature six foot floral standards with begonia baskets and thirty foot tall palms forming an arch above the bridal party.
