Dunning in New York Reveals a Noted Financier’s Rise and Fall
A New York obituary style summary recalls Edwin J. Dunning once seen as a brilliant but risky banker. Son of a prominent dentist, he rose in Wall Street, befriended Cyrus W. Field, and ran a lavish life from 63 Wall Street. His 1878 collapse halted his ascent, leading to arrest for fraud and Ludlow Street jail. He later fled to England, returned after statutes expired, and lived with intermittent earnings until about age 55.
