Two Firemen Hurt In Somerville Blaze
A major Somerville fire at Armstrong Cooperage Company on 74 Somerville Avenue destroyed two buildings, killed 12 horses, and caused about $20,000 in losses. Watchman James Henderson alerted Box 13, freeing four horses with help from neighbors, but flames prevented saving more. Firemen faced ice, smoke, and injuries while work continued to save stock and workshop. The fire was aided by Cambridge apparatus, but spread rapidly from the stable to the workshop before being contained. Coast side accidents leave several injured in city
Police report five coast ing incidents yesterday with two likely fatal outcomes. Harry Weissner, 78 Carolina Ave Jamaica Plain, fractured both bones in his right leg after colliding with a fence on Newbern Street. Adolph Ricket and Herman Tilcher, both 10, of Chestnut Avenue Jamaica Plain, crashed their sleds on Chestnut Hill and suffered a brain concussion and a fractured leg respectively. Walter Cochrane, 14, Springer Street South Boston, fractured a leg after a collision on Sixth Street. Katherine Kennedy, 5, Bunker Hill Street, sustained a brain concussion after striking the curbstone near her home. Esther Lavin, 12, Tremont Street, was injured when her sled hit horses at a hack on Phillips Street Roxbury. All were treated at City Hospital or Relief Station. Ricket is not expected to survive.
