In Topheka Kansas on January 12 Governor Leedy delivered his annual message to the Legislature asserting Kansas prosperity and criticizing Eastern states. He contrasted Kansas with more affluent states and voiced regret over perceived misfortunes of his “pretentious sisters.”
The East praises Kansas for its blessings during hard times while denouncing Grub street scribblers who attack the state. The text recalls Kansas as a pillar of cloud and fire guiding an oppressed people and vows to keep fires alight for a government of the people. The Governor targets the Interstate Commerce Commission as a subterfuge for justice.
The proceedings centered on allegations of nude dancing by the famed performer Little Egypt at the Seeley dinner. A blast at the Columbia Powder Company tank house in Pittsburg Pennsylvania at 9 15 this morning killed proprietor Mr Stickney and his two daughters. Fatally injuring Mr P McCluskey and seriously injuring Walter Crane. By 10 30 three residences and outbuildings were burned.
Hughes Fawcett, agent for Stuart & Sons of Lisburn Ireland, was arrested on an indictment accusing him of false declarations to obtain lower duties on linen threads in March 1895. Judge Brown set bail at 4000 dollars. Fawcett denies the charges.
Grand jury in Wilmington finds a true bill against Captain Edward Murphy for taking a filibustering party to Cuba aboard the steamer Luarada last summer. He was later wrecked on the Commodore off the Florida coast and appeared in court with a broken arm.
A banquet at the Ellicott Club in Buffalo celebrated the successful transmission of electric power from Niagara Falls to Buffalo. About 400 guests attended including Elihu Thomson of Lynn Massachusetts Charles A Coffin of General Electric Boston George Westinghouse of Pittsburgh and John E Hudson of Boston.
Ernest Chase, who tried to murder his wife and then killed himself a month ago, received a life term today from Judge Chapin at Jackson Prison. It marks the first such sentence in years for similar offences.
