Letter from circulation manager recounts a record Sunday with supply exhausted daily. Dealers sold out by noon, extra bundles delivered, and sales nearly 500 higher than any prior Sunday. Praise given to boys and stores for strong performance.
In Lawrence on January 11 the Democratic majority blocked city bills in the accounts committee, preventing payrolls until a convention is held. The three Democrats and two Republicans were split by illness, risking five years without expenditure on the borrowed $300,000. The mayor said the convention would be held by mid next week.
Police found the Downing family on South street suffering from hunger and cold. Marshal Worcester ordered Officer Smith to provide food and fuel at city expense for the man wife and several young children.
The Anglo American general arbitration treaty was signed in Washington by Secretary Olney and Sir Julian Pauncefote. Lord Gough attended, with Cridler and Blandford as American witnesses. The pact creates a high court of arbitration with three Supreme Court members and three Court of Appeals members from Great Britain. It awaits Senate ratification.
Mr Henry D Huggan won the Boston School Board presidency on the first legitimate ballot after Mr Paul failed to secure a majority. The vote tally reflected a split board with 25 ballots cast though only 24 members existed, and William T Haton aided the Huggan camp by opposing the prior administration.
The President transmits to the Senate a treaty for arbitration of all differences between the United States and Great Britain. It aims to substitute civilized methods for war and to set a pattern for peaceful dispute resolution, with hopes it will inspire other nations and mark a new epoch in civilization. A blaze in Brooklyn on January Ni destroyed a 200foot long hay market building at Willard's dock. Loss to the building stood at 5000 dollars, while William C. Bloomingdale claimed total losses of about 50 000 dollars for the contents and establishment.
The Boston Associated Board of Trade discussed four committee reports at Young's last evening led by new president Rufus A. Flanders. Debates covered metropolitan district expansion, freight-rate discrimination, establishment of a US Department of Commerce and Manufactures, and alcohol sales by paint dealers. The report on metropolitan district backed Boston county. critics warned of loss of local self government and higher taxes.
Bonny reports the massacre of all members of a British expedition that left the coast January 1 en route to Benin City. The group included Acting Consul-General Phillips Major Crawford Captain Bolsragon and other officials. Ivy returned to Bonny with news that Benin subjects killed the entire party on the Niger coast protectorate.
The Rev. Arthur J. Teeling of St. Mary's Church was nearly killed when his carriage stopped at Market square and the rear wheels blocked electric tracks. An approaching car struck the carriage tossing Teeling to the ground and pinning him briefly. He suffered a deep cut above the eye and other bruises before being taken to the parochial residence on South Common Street.
Washington Jan 11 The Pacific funding bill failed in the House with 102 yeas and 167 nays on engrossment and third reading. Adjourned until tomorrow. A separate measure allowing former regular army officers from the rebellion to wear their highest-rank uniforms was approved.
The Times notes Senate reluctance to defeat a broadly approved policy. The Chronicle hails the signing as the event of the nineteenth century, lauding Sir Julian Paunce‑ fotte and praising President Cleveland and Mr. Olney for advancing humanity and peace between Britain and the United States.
John Hennessey of 42 Hastings Street Cambridge wandered to 42 Green Street last evening. A dispute with Joseph Roselle of 32 Green Street ended with Roselle biting off a portion of Hennessey's left ear. Roselle is jailed at Joy Street station.
Henry P. Tibbetts of 20 Eagleside street Roxbury fell from a moving electric car on Dudley street opposite Police Station 9 at 8 o clock last evening and was badly bruised about the face.
A well dressed man registered as Francis P. Ford of Boston at the Nar Ragansett Hotel and was arrested on a charge of defrauding the hotel. He claimed four days of luxuries and no money to pay his board bill, saying a remittance from Boston relatives was expected. He washed for trial.
Ten old Boston and Maine railroad engines attracted attention as they were hauled to Springfield repair shops after being sold to move to mining districts.
Thirty five weavers joined six others who walked out on strike at Granite Mill No 3 in Fall River on January 1. They protest wage cuts from changes in the style of goods.
