Carnegie Sees No Need for Tariff on Steel

Carnegie told a committee that protective steel tariffs are unnecessary, arguing the industry has outgrown infancy and advocating tariff reductions. He dismissed socialism as a non-issue, cited faith in human nature, and claimed wealth distribution is rising while urging needle protection for a growing U.S. industry.

Knox aide says Carnegie testimony on Attorney General claim absurd

Washington sources report Secretary of State Knox declined to comment on Andrew Carnegie's testimony. An intimate friend defended Knox, noting McKinley's first offer in 1897, Knox's 1901 cabinet entry after a March 2 conference, and a 25 year personal friendship influencing the appointment.

Boston & Maine Freight Handlers Vote for General Strike

At Bernian Hall the Boston and Maine Freight Handlers Assembly authorized a general strike with four dissenters. District officers opposed a general strike but delegates pressed for a united action to back longshoremen. Committees were named to call workers to quit at 7 am, with New Haven workers kept at work for tactical reasons. The strike aims for a living wage across waterfront crafts, with ongoing talks and mixed responses from allied unions and employers.
