In Lowell and nearby, two four story brick blocks on Middle street containing the central fire station and armories burned after midnight. Fire destroyed 20,000 rounds of cartridges and several kegs of gunpowder. Losses exceed 75,000 with the alarm system disabled and electric lights out citywide. Nearby Billerica Centre suffered a separate wooden building blaze with 40 boys at Mitchells school unharmed.

Officers arrested Thomas E. Croly of 48 Curve street for robbing E. G. Knapp of 1350 Washing ton street of 600 dollars and a watch and chain. John O Melia was caught in a break in at W B Plympton’s shop on Portland street with two coats recovered. A watch and chain valued at 25 dollars were recovered from Louis Sonneben on Portland street. Matilda Herman was arrested for larceny of a gold watch and chain valued at 50 dollars, five gold rings and a cloak valued at 66 dollars from Anna Cunningham. watch and chain recovered and pawn ticket found.
A Los Angeles express rear car derailed near Sumner Kern County tumbling eighty feet down a grade. The burning car carried sleeping emigrants with several fatally burned and many seriously injured. The main train reached the next station twenty miles away before the loss was noticed. A separate ore train failure of air brakes near St Elmo Colorado killed Engineer Connors and Fireman Whaley as it crashed into the town.
The wife of J. G. Blaine Jr. gave birth to a nine-pound boy in New York on January 11, adding a new grandchild to the Blaine family.
