A heavy caravan caused a five inch hydrant to snap, sending a deluge through East Cambridge. The brick block at the Cambridge corner with Second Street and several houses on Cambridge between Second and First streets suffered considerable flood damage.
A four horse Libby Company wagon crashed into a hydrant at Cambridge and Second streets causing a geyser fifty feet high and widespread flooding from the courthouse to Lechmere. Water damaged Browne drug store and multiple Cambridge street properties as crews struggled to shut off supply for hours.
Hyannis Jan 10 The northeasterly gale has battered Cape Cod with three unknown three masted schooners taking shelter near Handkerchief shoal. The vessels were swept by great seas while coastwise shipping is tied up from Buzzards Bay to Chatham. Snowdrifts and ice cripple telephone service as crews seek anchorage after the Christmas gale.
Frank J. Crane Jr of 5 Summer avenue was struck by an inbound express at Oak Grove station after alighting from an outward-bound train. The engine ran over his left leg and severed the foot at the ankle.
New York January 10. Captain Franklin D Wiltie of the Marine Corps will be tried by court martial at the Brooklyn Navy Yard tomorrow on charges of failing to liquidate some old debts.
A Philadelphia heiress and her male companion Cohen fled across the United States and Canada, reaching Chicago with only $1.60. Cohen, posing as a barber named Robert King, denied harm and planned extradition waivers as police traced their route from New York to Montreal, St. John, Halifax, Boston, and finally Chicago where they rented a room. A letter to her father was found. she had left with Miss De Janon from Philadelphia amid a disputed romance and runaway case.
Miss Roberta De Janon granddaughter of Philadelphia seed merchant Robert Buist and Frederick Cohen were arrested in a North Side boarding house. The 17 year old girl and her companion, long hunted by police and detectives across major cities, were located in a $4 a week room at 68 West Superior street since last Thursday night.
A Philadelphia waiter and a young woman were stopped in Chicago after information from F Schadler led police to their rooms. The girl Roberta De Janon admitted her identity after a letter was found. The couple claimed the plan stemmed from the woman’s wish to escape her grandfather and school.
