Woman suffragists announce plans to picket the White House grounds with silent sentinels after another appeal to President Wilson for support of the Susan B Anthony amendment. The plan aims to obstruct the President's entry and exit with a sentinel carrying a device pleading the suffrage cause.
Harry K. Thaw, released 15 months ago from the asylum after the Stanford White case, was indicted in New York on kidnapping Fred Gump Jr. of Kansas City and assaulting him with a whip. George F. O By rnes, described as his bodyguard, was also indicted. O Byrnes was reportedly arrested in Philadelphia as detectives seek Thaw.
The House rules committee is poised to drop hearings on the Wood resolution seeking an inquiry into leaks before Wilsons peace note. Democratic members say Lawson promised to disclose names and amounts but may have failed to provide substantiating evidence and thus protested the proceedings.
Frederick L Small, the ex Boston broker, was sentenced by Judge John Rivel to death for murdering his wife Florence Arlene Small. He will appeal today by filing a bill of exceptions and pursuing further legal steps to contest the verdict and sentence set for January 15, 1918.
The Carroll county jury convicted Small of murder in the first degree with capital punishment. Attorneys Mathews Stevens and Abbott plan a bill of exceptions to seek release. They note law grants a year and a day of life from sentence for such appeals. The judge allowed time for the bill. Mathews will also probe the death of Dr. Sarah Jenness in a house fire. Ten jurors favored murder in the first degree, two urged the death sentence. one juror vowed to stay in the room until next spring before changing.
After New York creditors filed for bankruptcy against the Globe Export Company of Boston, Emil Wallach president of the firm has disappeared. Debts in his name and for the company may reach $60 000 with over $10 000 already lodged against him. Wallach left offices at 2 Milk Street and lived at 44 Monadnock Street Dorchester, missing since December 9. Creditors include Henry A. Egges and Charles Chipman’s Sons Co Inc and Swift Friedman Atherton and others with claims near 7000, including a bank and H B Claflin Co. of New York.

Dover New Hampshire January 9 Chief Justice Robert G Pike of the Superior Court died at his home at age 66 He was a Dartmouth graduate 1872 who turned from civil engineering to teaching then law He served as an associate justice of the State Supreme Court in 1896 and later joined the Superior Court He was named chief justice three years ago and was not married.
Shoemaker William I. Zidel of 513A Medford Street reports two dark skinned women entered his Somerville shop last evening and fled with his $50 roll after a playful foot tickle. He provided descriptions to police and said he had not seen them before.
Frank Morss of 86 Ash street Waltham was found dead in his bed yesterday. Neighbors last saw him Sunday night and the Medical Examiner said he likely died then. He lived alone while his wife visited relatives in England. He was 30 and worked as a machinist.
New Orleans January 9 Pete Herman of New Orleans won a 20 round decision over Kid Williams of Baltimore to claim the bantamweight championship. Herman earned the title with the victory over Williams in the scheduled bout.

William Hobart, who shot himself twice in the head yesterday at his Quincy home after a supervisor called, was found to be nearly $300 short in his accounts, a statement from firm head George W. Nightingale said last night.
Hobart of a prominent Quincy family worked for the G W C W Nightingale Co with five children. He earned $14 weekly. After the shooting he told police and doctors he did not intend suicide and aimed to gain sympathy for himself and family amid financial strain.
