A New Orleans meeting of United Confederate Veterans camp Army of the Tennessee adopted a resolution by General Stephen Chalaron protesting President McKinley inviting the Confederates to Memphis next spring. The measure warned Memphis not to extend the invitation.
A Memphis protest against inviting President McKinley to the Confederate reunion in May will be ignored. The invitation, extended by city officials, business groups and Confederate Veterans, will be delivered to McKinley by a committee chosen for the purpose.
Washington January 9 The President rests well and shows steady improvement. Dr Rixey the attending physician reports the grippe is responding to treatment with no fever today and continued progress at the White House.
Thursday brings rain or snow with west to north winds and a shift to southerly by night. Friday clears with winds turning westerly and increasing, and coastal areas see brisk to fresh breeze. From Rome an official order appoints Rev. Father J. Gannon as provincial head of the eastern Jesuit division covering New York New Jersey Pennsylvania Maryland District of Columbia and New England. The province includes twelve colleges and about 800 members. Gannon, 45, from Cambridge Mass, has 25 years in the order and previously taught philosophy at Woodstock Md. His four year term begins now.
Governor John Wind retired at noon and visited the St Paul Dispatch 3 pm. He censured by the paper during his term, told Managing Editor Harry T. Flack he was a private citizen, then struck editor Mr Black between the eyes. A scuffle followed before separation.
An explosion at Standard Oil Company works in Brooklyn left two men dead and several others injured, with varying degrees of severity, this afternoon in New York.
