Englishman warns Gladstone on Mormon missionary bands

An Englishman asked Mr Gladstone to curb Mormon missionaries in Britain claiming they lure thousands of youths to Utah. Gladstone said government cannot intervene as youths allegedly go willingly. Fire alarm sounds at Albany street blaze damages several homes

The 8M Albany street fire began in Dennis Cashman’s second floor apartment around 8 33 pm Monday. Cashman, Frank Borsh and Wane Burrill occupy the building owned by William Manning. Cashman’s furniture and clothing loss is $300 with no insurance. The structure suffers $200 damage, fully insured. Water damages affect other occupants. At Melrose Cornelius Casey’s Maple street house also burns from a defective flue but is confined to the attic. Greenhouses and some household goods are damaged. losses exceed $1 000, insured. Other fires noted.

District preacher called to Ashford church

The Rev Mr Michael has been called to serve the Congregational church in Ashford. A York County Agricultural Society annual meeting will be held in Biddeford on January 18. Alfred G Prentiss of Saco appointed assignee of the J F Goldthwaite property in Biddeford. In Searsmont a quarrel left George Spear fatally wounded by a shooter named Keen. Spear’s wounds are dangerous with no arrests yet. Mr and Mrs Stephen S Smith of Dayton celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with Rev John Cobb present. The Biddeford smallpox scare eases though a varioloid case remains. John Greeley, Somerset railroad baggagemaster, killed near West Waterville in a railway accident. A temperance crusade is expected after Biddeford’s rum carnival. Grand jury reports 125 indictments with 100 for liquor sales. Visitors to Biddeford urged to carry medicine or stay dry.

A Burlington party guest wore a dress 36 years old and various worn items including a 100 lace 45 bonnet 22 hawk gloves 48 shoes 15 stockings 46 shirt 40 comb 22 and collar 36. The report also notes 117 aaths from violence in 188, with 32 personal crisis reports. Two murderers Hayden and Carr were executed in 1881. Four deaths from alleged homicidal assaults occurred: McCollough Stirling ton Merchant Barnet O'Brien Searsburg and L. M. William Readsboro. The Cook couple of Bellows Falls died mysteriously last October and are added to the list.
