Imperial Rescript Stirs Germany Berlin Sees Impending Clash

An imperial rescript dated January 4 and countersigned by Prince Bismarck restricts the king's direct government role in Prussia while preserving his constitutional rights. Officials are urged to back the policy, even at elections, sparking alarm across Berlin and prompting varied liberal and foreign reactions about a possible crisis. The press in London Vienna and Paris weighs its implications for German unity and upcoming political struggle.

Later Reports from Siberia on Jeannette Search

Telegraphs from Irkoutsk dated Dec 26 report M Saulkowski aboard the Chasseur met the US steamer Rodgers in the Jeannette search. They left August 9 from the Rodgers toward Herald Island, with Strelok and Bremen expedition crews returning to Chinese ports. An American schooner carrying the stranded whaler captain joined, claiming to have seen a boat with corpses and Jeannette items cast on Herald Island. The Rodgers commander planned to winter there and, with Kamchatka dog purchases, organize thorough searches.
