Thrilling rescues mark a $6000 fire at a lodging house on 5 Walnut Street in Haverhill. Fire and police members freed 60 people trapped in a five story building gutted by flames. Details continued on Page 6.
Four thousand people gathered at Symphony Hall to memorialize Julia Ward Howe famed writer and reformer author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Assistant US District Attorney William H. Lewis urged hanging her portrait in Faneuil Hall among Boston’s patriots and heroes.
