Dallas Tragedy Recounts Fatal Duel at Col Richardson Home
The Marion Review reports a violent tragedy in which Maj Holmes, spurned by Mrs McKeen, shot her then wounded himself. Holmes visited Col Richardson in Dallas county for days while Mrs McKeen avoided him. After a demand to marry them both was refused, a pistol was fired, killing Mrs McKeen and leaving Holmes to die the next night.

Anecdote of Mr Legare in an 1830s survivorship case
An October American Review biographical sketch recounts Hugh S. Legare of South Carolina arguing the Pell and Wife versus the Executors of Ball case. Legare persuaded that Mrs Ball’s shouting for her husband proved his death first, securing a favorable verdict for Ball’s sisters and broader legacy interpretation.
