Tremont Temple Tax Ruling Doubts Church Exemption
The Supreme Court ruled Tremont Temple not exempt from local taxes. Evangelical Baptist Benevolent and Missionary Society owns the building and paid taxes in 1906 and 1907 under protest. The court found the building used for business and religious purposes with a lease to Tremont Temple Baptist Church, and noted the society’s charter limits property ownership to 350,000 while the building is assessed at 911,000.

An appeal to the Supreme Court challenges Judge Layed E. Chamberlain’s probate ruling that Carrie F. Abbott of Cambridge left 25000 to educational and charitable institutions, disinheriting relatives. The nephew George H. Willard of Waltham objects that the will was not her last and that she was not legally capable when made.
