Special to the Post from Washington notes a four and a half hour Senate session with few dramatic events. Focus falls on the speaker’s fragile health and calls for relief from constant desk duty while civil service reform and Utah polygamy debates continue. Voices clash over patronage, clerk hires, and the Utah bill with amendments on marriages and ecclesiastical trustees.
In Washington today Senator Hale criticized Postmaster General for not fully disclosing Brown of Maine influence in fourth class appoint- ments. Hale accused Brown of office sale and pressure tactics, while West of Missouri defended patronage as a long standing practice and warned against exaggerating reform.
Washington dispatch reports in the House the calls of the States for bills and resolutions resumed with many measures listed by several representatives. The session adjourned at 4 40 with 882 bills introduced. Speaker Carlisle absent, committee lists under revision, and final committee announcements due after more States and territories are addressed.
About 300 engineers and firemen on the elevated road gathered in eighty sixth street to hear the grievance committee report after meeting with company officials. The release was signed in Lowell and funds passed. Erie debt remains around 2 000. Ingham predicts more claims and says Erie still owes 2 060 in salaries.
Gloucester elects and confirms Charles Cressey as postmaster. A native of the city educated in its schools and long active in its fish trade, he is described as a progressive Democrat popular beyond politics. Low, the outgoing postmaster, writes congratulations and offers assistance before duties begin at month end.
Greenfield Mass Jan 6 The attachment of Publisher Henry D Watsons real estate by Gorham D Williams is town talk today Williams refuses to state the cause of his suit and has given no information to Watsons attorney It is understood the claim seeks a half interest in Watsons tool shop property upon payment of its cost It does not affect Watsons ability to continue his business
In Wellfleet Massachusetts on a date in January a petition is being signed by owners and masters addressed to Congress. It calls for two additional life saving stations between No. 9 in Truro and the Nauset Beach end in Eastham. It asks that the stations be built to improve coastal safety.
Senor Iglesias, former President of Peru, landed at Valparaiso. Municipal authorities met to plan actions for local interests if the new tax law fails to pass.
The funeral of Mrs. Weed wife of Hon Smith M Weed was held this afternoon with a large turnout from locals and visitors. Business places and schools closed for the observance.
The Christian Union Hall hosted a lively performance of Robertson’s School last evening by a company of ladies and gentlemen. The cast was well selected and both principals and school girls entered heartily into the spirit of the play.
Chester A. Arthur Jr. served as best man with bridesmaids Miss Wartieia of Washington Miss Sallie Elkins and Miss Grace Davis. groomsmen included Walker Blaine A C Oliphant Lieutenant T S Rogers and Sherlock Swann. ushers Dr J C Boyd and Truxton Beale. Notables present included Senators Camden Gorham Elkins Will Collins and Owen Tappen, Mrs Crook and Mrs Garrett. A grand reception followed with a floral display described as the city’s finest.
The city’s fish wharves show the same split among wholesale dealers with scarce stock raising prices from $2 to $2.25. Fishermen allege boycotting and fraud by anti members, while dealers deny wrongdoing and accuse fishermen of misrepresenting stock quality. New York dispatch says six crewmen of the whaling schooner Mary E. Simmons were capsized by a whale and picked up by and landed at Pernambuco aboard the County of Clare. They describe sighting whales near Pernambuco in November and the long, perilous day by a damaged boat before rescue.
Inspectors Garraughty Houghton and Mountain of Chief Hanscoms force seized evidence on recent night burglaries in the city and suburbs. They arrested four known local crooks George Busby Thomas Cook Thomas Gaines and George Cook for various offences after locating them in the early hours and the following morning. Busby and Gaines face serious charges while Cook and George Cook are held for disorderly behavior and related counts.
The Impecunious Club held its regular dinner at the St Nicholas Hotel yesterday at 4 o clock. W and list of members attended led by presiding officer Cushing with George H Dickinson as entertainer. Lieutenant James P Frost was unanimously elected secretary for the next meeting.
Moses Koch faced a hearing for assaulting Mrs. Louisa V. Lamb over a $1 rent balance. He kicked in her door as she dressed, hitting her on the head with a serious wound and allegedly choking and beating her. The magistrate denied bail due to her condition.

New York January 6 Today Mr Jay Gould departed at 10 o clock for Charleston to board his steam yacht Ata Lane for a long planned voyage in Southern waters George Gould stated the elevated railroad trouble has not altered his fathers plans and he could not say how long he will be away.
The piano and organ makers of Boston Lodge 4 held their annual meeting last evening and elected officers for the present year. The lodge is in flourishing condition financially with a large fund from the bank.
The Virgin Salt Company of New Haven Connecticut offers Virgin Salt as the cleanest purest and whitest salt. Customers urged to ask grocer for a large nine by ten inch lithographed card featuring ten colors and to try one cent for a large package costing ten cents.

Lehigh and Susquehanna rivers rose or flooded basements cellars and warehouses while roads washed out and train service affected. Swollen waterways damaged canoes canals mills and embankments across Mauch Chunk Wilkes Barre Easton Port Deposit Laconia and Concord with crews rescuing animals and passengers as authorities reassess routes and safety.
Special to the Post from Augusta Maine reports two spans of the 1879 iron bridge across the Kennebec were swept away by an ice freshet after yesterday’s rain. Parts collapsed as ice and debris struck temporary piers, disrupting service between Waterville and Cumberland Junction. Passengers will be diverted via Lewiston while spans are replaced, an effort expected to take about three weeks. The river’s ice companies face losses, and the freshet is described as one of the worst for the season.

Judgments were entered in the United States Circuit today against United States Senator Dwight M. Sabin for an aggregate sum of over 35000 dollars. The claims were for money due on promissory notes drawn by the Northwestern Car and Manufacturing Company Sabin & Co or D M Sabin or indorsed by Sabin for other parties. The amounts recorded included First National Bank of Hartford 11120 dollars and Merchants' National Bank of Chicago 23925 dollars.
The Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society held its first farmers institute at Agricultural Hall with large attendance. William J. Wright was elected president. They emptied drawers stole napkin rings forks spoons Waterbury watches and attempted the safe. The gang fled likely by the 5 30 train to Boston leaving packing boxes behind. Police believe same burglars as in prior small jobs.
John G Stevens, 66, president of the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Co, died at 4 55 PM from a pistol wound in the Pennsylvania railroad building in Renton New Jersey. Officials say it was self inflicted amid financial strain though relatives cite accidental discharge while inspecting a revolver meant for protection. He leaves a widow and five children.

Providence January 6 The Geneva woollen mills shut down due to a strike by the weavers. The Knights of Labor branch resolved to aid and support the workers through the strike. Messages of sympathy from other Knights of Labor branches promised assistance if the strike prolongs.
Police in East St. Louis protest unpaid two months wages due to a empty police fund. Officers have not made arrests in 48 hours and threaten resignation if pay is not provided soon.
Brayley and McClung, wholesale milliners, have failed with liabilities around 100000 and assets 110000. Epstein, dealer in gentlemen's furnishings, was saved, with liabilities of about 50000.

Veo, about 23, treasurer of West Rutland Marble Co, studied at Harvard Dental College, and may have aided McNeil by straightening books. He waives examination and is held for further action. McNeil last seen en route to Canada.
Malden Democratic city committee elects Peter J. Maguire chair and Paul J. McMahon secretary. After an informal ballot, George G. Hill and Lemuel Tilden vie for postmaster with Bell winning endorsement. Committee will recommend Putnam for Faulkner Station post office.
Details emerge on the death of Miss Faylor as the Guilfords face trial postponement. Burlington town clerk Sewall sought earlier explanations after burial was permitted without a physician's death certificate. Ot individuals allege the Taylors lacked medical witnesses, while undertaker Tripp notes suspicions. A fatal shooting occurred at a 10 cent lodging house at 217 State Street. Gus Rieba, 24, a clerk, was shot by a one legged man known as Peggy Frank after a dispute over a bed and a 10 cent charge. Peggy fled and eluded capture.
The Philadelphia and Reading railroad and coal and iron companies report November 1835 gross earnings up by 72,489 and expenses down by 246,350, yielding a net earnings increase of 318,839 from November 1831. For the twelve months to Nov 30, 1835, gross earnings fall by 2,806,832 while expenses drop 1,916,577 and net earnings decline 890,305.

Scannell traveled to New York to confer with mineral water manufacturers and related trades about the stance before a congressional committee on undertaluations at the New York Custom House and the possibility of duty-free admission for manufactured mineral waters. Scannell is a respected committee member from the Parker House meeting in January.
