Heavy damage reported across Pennsylvania, New York, and Vermont as Susquehanna and Mohawk rivers flood towns. Bridges carried away at Owego and Duncannon. many cellars flooded. trains disrupted as rivers rise rapidly and ice jams form in towns from Montpelier to Keene.
Columbus January 5 The House of Representatives adopted a resolution authorizing the committee to hire a stenographer and cover other necessary expenses for the proper investigation of the Hamilton county election cases.
The excerpt asserts Mellen could be extradited under the 1861 treaty which requires delivery up of tall persons charged with crimes including murder assassination patricide infanticide poisoning and assault with intent to commit murder among others. The quotation underscores the treaty language and its reach for extradition.
SPECIAL TO THE POST Augusta Me Jan 5 The first day of the legislative reunion opened under cloudy weather and a southeast rain storm hindering travel yet a substantial turnout is anticipated for the banquet exercises at the State House and the reception by Governor Robie. About 200 ex members with ladies attended the State House reception and ex Governors Hamlin Dingley Connor and Plaited received in the hall. Hon J H Drummond of Portland will be toastmaster.
In Bromfield Maine yesterday afternoon Harville Wentworth was stabbed in the abdomen by Foss of Eaton New Hampshire. Wentworth dies this noon. Foss, described as quarrelsome, fled and is at large. County Attorney Wright notified and plan to arrest the murderer.
Gloucester Massachusetts January 5 report most of the fleet from Georges and Lahave banks have arrived or been reported. One Lahave schooner Hyperion and five dockers Eben Parsons Conductor Mabel Dilloway Edward Trevoy and R Walker remain heard from with anxiety for their safety. Fleet says storm less severe near Georges and Lahave though high seas. Some fishermen were out in dories the day of the gale. Monitor from Grand Bank reports a large iron buoy drifted from Castel. Orient, another missing vessel, has arrived in Boston. Six remaining listed for news.
In New Haven on January 5 creditors allege fraud tied to George W. Miles Whosphate Company insolvency. Trustee seeks suit to invalidate John Guyer title and recover proceeds from R. J. Ruth for phosphate shipments worth over 100000 dollars and factory transfer prior to insolvency. Miles continues operations while creditors claim they are shut out.
New York January 5 stock holders of the Hoston Startford and Erie railroad meet to discuss an offer from a prominent capitalist to take the stock in the Graham suit against the B H and E road. Shares valued from 1 to 2 dollars since 1870, 25 days to deposit holdings with the American Loan and Trust Company for an osement totaling about 130000 dollars.
J M Ashley Jr superintendent of the Toledo and Ann Arbor road was arrested on obstruction of United States mails charges tonight. His men removed iron ties switches and frogs at Howell and guarded the track before restoring it under his orders. Hearing postponed to next Monday as a Detroit commissioner handled the case. The Detroit Lansing and Northern night train was halted by the sabotage though mornings trains ran normally.
In Hanxovin N TH on January 5 a major case against J Braga over liquor law violations consumed the day. Prominent professors citizens and students supported Biaga an Italian newcomer testifying that the witnesses' characters did not justify holding the respondent. A decision is set for Thursday.
Providence Jan. 5 The Geneva worsted mill management posts a notice that the mill will shut tomorrow after a strike by weavers demanding reinstatement of a discharged workman for profanity. The strike is supported by the majority of operatives who have appealed to the local Knights of Labor.
North Abington Mass Jan 5 Harris and Leonard were arrested on a warrant for homicide in the death of H F Tirrell of West Abington. They are jailed awaiting appearance before Judge Kelley tomorrow morning. Tirrell funeral held at South Abington with Rev J B Jones officiating.
Salem Mass Jan 5 The strike at Wiley and Poor’s carrying shop in Peabody ended today with workers returning tomorrow morning after more than three weeks out. The firm acceded to the Knights of Labor price list presented by the workers.
Worcester Mass December 5 The Central Massachusetts Poultry Club opened its annual exhibition today continuing today and tomorrow. The show features more than 300 entries and over 700 birds with competitors from across New England.
London January 5. The steamer Norwegian, from Philadelphia to Glasgow, lost 160 head of cattle during a sequence of gales encountered at sea.
Comassey Massachusetts January 5 at a meeting of the director aircetor of the Cohasset Savings Bank a dividend of 2 44 per cent was declared. This makes a total of 4 per cent for 2 years.

Treasurer Whitmore found a cast iron box with 5140 in bills and a bank check left in the safe overnight stolen. The box was later found in the attic unopened with all contents intact after a fire alarm and explosion drew crowds and police into the building.
London reports a letter inviting Mr Gladstone to visit the United States and study Irish home rule. Gladstone declines due to ill health and pressing duties, though hints at possible autumn travel if Parliament's next section ends. Separate items note Irish political fundraising, Catholic college endowments, Grand Duke Michael's quarrel with the Czar, and other Europe news.
Mrs Freedman recalls a midnight break in at No 17 Berwick Park. A man with a dark lantern demanded silence and stole a $100 gold watch from Mr D H Freedman while threatening to kill. Police had not yet found the burglar.
Lorenza Snow one of the Twelve Apostles of the Mormon church was convicted twice in Ogden on separate indictments charging unlawful cohabitation. The defense argued he had lived with his third wife only since the Edmunds law. Judge Powers told the jury such living with another woman while having a legal wife is unlawful cohabitation. Sentencing was set for January 16.
A suit was filed this afternoon in Greenfield against Henry D. Watson publisher of Good Cheer and several other monthly publications. Attachments for 20000 were made by Gorham D. Williams, the plaintiff. Watson was temporarily absent in execution.
Four men attempted to cross the swollen Esopus creek in Ulster township by rowboat. The boat swamped and Owen Madden, former highway commissioner of Ulster, drowned.
The bodies of John Govan Jr and Daniel Cronan were found on the beach near Jamestown Chal lam county. Physicians report signs of drowning and strangulation with head injuries. Authorities suspect a wandering band of Indians killed them and set their bodies adrift in a boat.
Prisoners George and Dick Jeffreys, George Beasley, Lewis Douglass four murderers, and Luther Smith who knocked down the guard at the jail in Charleston were arrested last night and jailed this morning.
Cunningham & Co green glass bottle works in Pittsburg reopened today after seven months of idle furnace operation. Workers return to full wage scale as the plant resumes production and the strike by green glass blowers nears an end.
In Washington on January 5 the House did not announce committees as leaders worked overnight. The session resumed after adjournment with bills and resolutions to be introduced. New York's Mr. Muller returned to the chamber amid congratulations and a floral welcome as oath of office was given. Massachusetts members proposed several public building and law bills.
Special Officer Abbott of the third division arrested Edward Duffy of Cambridge yesterday afternoon. Duffy was among five boys who broke into Lewis Parson’s tobacco and cigar store on December 29, 1885. A large number of cigars and pipes were stolen and remain unrecovered. The other boys have been arrested.
Keene New Hampshire January 5 The city government was inaugurated today Mayor Batchel Ger spoke to a receptive audience Samuel Nims was elected city clerk and Edward Bullard was chosen president of the common council in the ceremonial transfer of power.
George Provost, intoxicated, fell from a moving train in Bellows Falls Vermont today. He lost an arm, broke his leg in two places, and sustained serious injuries that may be fatal.
George Douglass, the new city marshal of Gloucester Massachusetts, has taken office and vows a strict regime against liquor dealers and keepers of houses of ill repute, promising a more active enforcement of the law.
Brockton, Mass. evangelists Layfora and Towner conduct revival meetings at the South Congregational and Methodist churches. The sessions will continue for two weeks.
The Journal of Commerce will note exports of domestic cottons for the week ending Dec 3 1885 at 5781 packages with a yearly total of 215 888 packages, compared with 162 894 last year an increase of 52 939 packages.
New Orleans report says Scannell & Lafave sugar and molasses factors have applied for a six twelve and eighteen month respite. Their assets total 138000 dollars with liabilities 120090 dollars.
An investigation into smuggling into the United States has been quietly underway for a week. Warrants have been issued by the U S commissioner for the arrest of twelve tradesmen who have been dealing with American customers. They include farriers jewelers and tailors. A large Boston Theatre audience applauded Auber's Fra Diavolo with spirited singing and lively comedy. Signor Arditi conducted with vivid energy while Del Puente Cherubini and Caracciolo provided strong comic contrast. Alma Fohstram impressed in Zerema, Ravelli excelled as Fra Diavolo, and the cast drew applause despite some language slips and staging live. Tonight Manon will debut with Mme Hank in the title role.
In Harbeory Conn Jan 5 party legislative caucuses chose Senate and House officers for the coming session. Senate Republicans named Stiles T Stanton and William Sydney Downs for president pro tem and clerk respectively. Democrats backed J W Alsop for president pro tem. House Republicans settled on John A Tibbetts for speaker after three ballots. Clerks were chosen as Austin Brainard and William J McConville after a tight ballot. Democrats nominated J J Phelan for speaker and Hemingway and Carpion for clerks. The session convenes tomorrow with Gov Harrison to address both houses in joint session.
In New York on Jan 5 the city government deadlock ended after 145 ballots. Captain John Waters was elected president of the common council. Henry E. Turner Jr. became chief of police and Henry A. Bentley was re elected street commissioner. An ordinance amendment forbids officers sharing department information.
Philadelphia January 5 Twelve days out on a Jacksonville voyage the steamer City of Nassau is believed lost by owner J Mifflin. The Savannah passed Nassau after departure noting sound condition. Commanded by Captain Thomas Ek Payne with C E Fagan as chief officer, chief Grimes engineer. Owners include J Mifflin C W Jenks Tyson Smith. Valued at 30000 with no cargo.
Polleneute and Favre's planing mill at Pearlington Mississippi burned with 2,000 feet of lumber destroyed and loss estimated at 30,000 dollars. In Holland Vermont five grain farm buildings owned by Henry Pinney were burned with 3,000 dollars loss, insured for 1,500. A small fire at Central House Salem was extinguished, while a chimney fire at 605 East Eighth Street South Boston caused no damage. Alarm noted at 1:28 a.m.
Edwin W. Lang aged 19 was arrested by Patrolman Fassenden of the first division last night on the charge of deserting from the United States army. Lang was quartered at St. Louis from which place he deserted two weeks ago.
J B Ouimet, his son and two brothers in law from Riviere des Prairies were drowned crossing ice on a small lake in northern Argenteuil county.
The Virgin Salt Company of New Haven Connecticut promotes their salt with a limited offer. Customers are urged to ask their grocer for the salt and receive a two color lithographed card as a gift, plus a ten cent package at a cost of one cent for trial.
Montreal reports on Jan 5 say after J J Milloy was arrested by U S customs at Petersburg, American officers have gathered information about other Montreal tradesmen connected to the case and their activities.
Mrs Sarah A Kelley widow of Horace J Kelley of the 177th Pennsylvania petitions Senate President Sherman claiming poverty after battlefield losses. She argues for recognition as national bard with salary to support her and her children, citing family military service and poetry talent. Endorsers include local editor Thomas J Hum and county officials.

Most members study at Harvard. two at Trinity.

Lawyer H D Hadleck of Portland returns home, breaking unity for the syndicate’s big two temporarily.
