Washington reports on January 4 describe the Ananias Club growing with new members including Representatives Tawney Smith Swager Shirley Fitzgerald and Busbey as lawmakers brace for the President's secret service message. The piece predicts exciting session scenes as those touched by the President respond.
George H. Brown the former police man and new mayor in Lowell orders the resignations of two Board of Health members as one of his first acts in office. The move comes after prior public signaling in the Sunday Post.
The men asked to resign are William C. Doherty and Charles W. Taylor. As yet neither has responded to the mayor's letter. Observers say the mayor may remove them if they refuse. The letter asked resignations as evidence they have the city’s best interests at heart.
The Washington Street Tunnel has run over a month and eased congestion at Park Street and Scollay Square. Through passengers move faster and more comfortably. When Haymarket transfer is ready and East Cambridge tracks built, North Station and overall service will improve. Officials monitor impacts of Tremont Street Subway changes and plan further relief at North Station by rerouting surface cars and extending lines. Transfers at January 13, 1909.
Reading Jan 4 John Weston Gleason 33 missing since Saturday was found in Goulds Swamp two miles south of Andover with a gunshot wound to the right lung. A loyal hunting dog lay beside him, refusing to leave the body and had to be dragged away.
Thomas Stevens 17 of 37 Woburn Street helped lead a search in Andover woods for Gleason who died from an accidental shotgun discharge. The body was found with a wound in the right breast and the gun nearby. Medical Examiner Dr Dow ruled death accidental after investigation.
A Finance Commission report accuses Boston water department of political favoritism and extravagance under Mayor Fitzgerald. It cites 11 of 19 contracts over $2000 awarded without bids, $150000 extra administration costs, and annual losses of at least $20000 from favoritism. It warns of $750000 needed to curb per capita water waste of 60 gallons daily.
A report notes operating costs excluding mains rose from 1898 99 to 1907 08 with peaks and dips and states the main cause is overstaffing. It claims Mayor Hibbards 800000 appropriation this year is about 159000 too high. Continued on Page 12 First Column.
Thornton Jenkins Hains spent over four hours on the stand detailing the shooting of publisher William E. Annis and the related conjugal troubles of Captain Peter C. Haine Jr. The defense argues these troubles caused the army officer's mental unbalancing, leading to the on sight killing. The testimony closed for the evening with more time expected tomorrow.
The defendant describes Aug 15 Bayside trip for real estate as he argues about armed men at the yacht club. He claims all shots came from Captain Hains before he rushed to protect his brother from John Tanning and others, and denies pointing a revolver at Mrs. Annis. He recounts drawing his weapon when Charles Roberts aimed at him.
Thornton Hains testified that on the Sunday before Annis was killed General Hains asked him to get a lawyer after Claudia Hains made a second confession to her husband.
Mrs. James Walsh, 48, mother of seven, was fatally burned when a kerosene lamp ignition set her light cotton dress aflame before her husband’s eyes. He tried to smother the flames with a mat but she perished from the blaze.

Rome Jan 4 Signor Mirabello recounts Queen Helena’s injury at Messina when a crazed man burst into a sheltering improvised hospital. The Queen stepped before a terrified wounded woman, was struck as the woman rushed the door, and suffered chest contusions with bleeding after the impact.
The minister of marine noted the doctor said little about the case while Queen Helena reportedly took chloral to sleep. The next day she pressed on with duties, lips often reddened by blood as 1500 wounded from Messina and Reggio arrived and Mayor Nathan contacted the Vatican seeking guidance.
The Vatican received 120 wounded non Catholics including Signor Nathan, once Grand Master of the Free Masons. Red Cross transport carried most to the hospital while nursing sisters comforted them inside the Vatican precincts. The Pope entered the hospital, eliciting tears and acts of reverence from patients and officials.
Frank Perret of Brooklyn, assisting Professor Matteucci of the Royal Observatory, says further shocks are inevitable due to a crust flaw at the quake site. He forecasts heavier shocks for Monday and January 8 when solar lunar alignment may increase strain. A fire burned municipal offices and damaged the Bank of Italy, but money was saved. a 9:45 p.m. tremor caused panic and wall collapses though no fatalities were reported.
