Keeler announces growth at 81 91 Washington Street Boston as the East Cambridge factory becomes the manufacturing arm of the establishment under F Geldowsky. They acquire the stock of artistic furniture including bedroom sets tables sideboards and bookcases and will sell at $25 to $100 off to make room for new goods.
The Ward 3 Democratic Club hosted a complimentary banquet in Ulman Hall for Mayor-elect Newhall. A reception at the old engine house preceded the supper, with over 100 members and guests attending. Lawrence county GOP chairman H A Davis delivered 63 letters from county chairmen endorsing Huston for a Cabinet role. Support favored Postmaster General or Interior Secretary. 77 counties heard from with no opposition to Huston. Davis calls it the first official Indiana move for Cabinet recognition.
The Daily News reports the threat of a major railroad strike tied to a tomorrow meeting at Chicago, Burlington & Quincy offices. Brotherhood grievance chair Cavener warns of severe consequences if Burlington rejects their proposals and cites legal counsel support.
In Providence on January 2 a man named Carroll who managed Admiral Vase’s farm at Pappoosesquash Point was found dead in his carriage. He had ridden to town with two hired men who met him returning home around 8 PM. Carroll’s wife reported his absence, and a bruise on the head prompted an inquest by the medical examiner.
San Domingo papers report United States Consul H C Astwood offered $200 000 for permission to exhibit the bans of Columbus in the United States for four years. The Dominican government refused the offer and papers condemn the consul for aiding the plan, urging recall.

In Aberdeen Mississippi near Fentress a farm ownership quarrel between Frank and James Coleman and Charles and William Delay led to a pitched battle with double barreled shotguns. Frank Coleman and Charles Delay died instantly. James Coleman and William Delay were wounded, as were two Delay sisters. Officials secured the scene as tensions cooled. All involved were prominent Choctaw county citizens.
Albany January 2 The superintendent of public works reports total canal expenditures for 1888 at 742263 dollars for repairs and operations. Canals opened May 10 and closed December 8. Tonnage fell to 4,942,948 in 1888 from 5,653,805 in 1887. Five year average tonnage 6,106,641.
New York on January 2 reports opening prices for standard fancy prints. Pacifics listed at 64% cents to jobbers with 6% cents short discounts, Cochecos at 6% cents, Cocheco Madders at 672 cents, Windsor at 6% cents, Merrimack at 62 cents, and Manchesters at 642 cents.
All flouring mills in St Louis except Anchor Mill shut down today under a Milwaukee convention agreement. Anchor Mill will close after satisfying two or three remaining orders. The pact affects 250 mills in the fall wheat belt, requiring closing or half time during January.
A band resembling the Indiana White Caps attacked a Bedford county farmer, dragged him from his horse, flogged him, and forced him to leave the county under threat of killing him. The incident was reported as a special dispatch to the Post from Lynchburg, Virginia.
