Former prize fighter known as Kid Carter was arrested in the South End yesterday on a charge of attempted murder after allegedly being with a woman. He denied killing her on Tuesday night and said he left her at 7 o clock.
Fifteen women and children were trapped in a three story lodging house in Haverhill when a fire starting in a closet with ash barrels spread through the walls. The sole entrance was cut off by flames as thick smoke filled the halls and awakened inmates by the fire bells.
Dr. George L. Farrell, mayor of Malden and former re elected leader, died last night from pneumonia just as recovery seemed likely. City officials mourn the loss of the long serving mayor.
A four story Tilton block on Merrimac street catches fire sending residents and shoppers crowding the streets. Firemen ladder to upper windows rescuing women and children as Mrs Croke and others are saved from the burning stairways.
Dr. Farrell of Malden aged 45 had been ill for weeks and died despite hopes he would recover. A Webster native educated at Jefferson Medical College he served as mayor and earlier as a school committee member. He helped at fires and in 1912 rescued a youth from a mob. He enforced curfew rules and spoke for woman suffrage.
The 1863 Battle of Murfreesboro in Tennessee, known as the Stone River clash, ends as one of the Civil War’s severe engagements. One year ago today Alfred Tennyson Dickens, son of Charles Dickens, died in New York from acute indigestion.

The school board approved using 145000 for salary increases this year for elementary teachers at the maximum of their grade. The board also ordered an investigation of the fire drill at Dearborn School initiated by master Charles F. King after the drill signal, per fire department request.
About 2200 elementary teachers begin the new year with raised pay of 48 to 144 dollars annually due to a revised schedule that adds three years to the maximum salary. The change follows a statewide scale shift while many at the top already receive the maximum. Fire drills at Dearborn School prompt scrutiny by the Fire Commissioner, who requests better procedures. He recommends two exits at Frothingham, a single fire signal for two schools, and moving the smallest Mather pupils to the first floor for safer egress. Pending board investigation, the matter is tabled.
Deputy Fire Chief William H. Steele died after nitric acid fumes poisoned him while washing an acid spill from H. H. Hay drug store basement. Five other Portland firemen, including Captains Parker and Black and Lieut. Eldredge, Gubbins, Redman, were in critical condition with pneumonia and burns. Black not expected to survive.
A blast of compressed air from a leaking tank at Reed and Vendret wholesale granite plant in Vernon street South Quincy yesterday killed Napoleon Reed and his brother in law Mitchell Lavoie.
Reed and Lavoie died when a repaired air tank ruptured on testing. Vendret was lightly injured by flying debris. Reed, 49, left a widow and four children. Lavole, 55, also left a widow and four children.
Former Lieutenant Governor Louis A. Frothingham issues a statement backing Curtis Guild for United States Senator. He cites Guilds record as Governor, liberal laws, and modern New England leadership. Frothingham urges a new Republican alignment to win victories in Congress era issues.
A distinct earthquake tremor was felt in Charlotte at 1 32 PM lasting about three seconds with shocks from east and west. No damage was reported.
Woburn youths threw gunpowder into a bonfire on Misery Hill. The blast badly burned Joseph Larrabee and Hugh Gilgun, risking their lives and eyesight. John Logue, 14, had his clothes torn from him, while 8-year-old Christopher Russo escaped with minor injuries.
A group of ten year old boys found stored gun powder in a shanty and set a fire in an open field. Larrabee and Gilgun threw powder into the blaze causing a massive flash. Logue was burned and stripped of clothes while Russo stood away.
The body of Mildred Donovan of Revere was identified in Malden near Holy Cross Cemetery. James Jennings known as Kid Carter, a prize fighter, was arrested for shooting William McPherson in a South End saloon. The case links a possible romance triangle and a dance night in Everett with the victim’s disappearance.
