Jesse Pomeroy yesterday afternoon spoke with Warden Bridges about his attempted escape. He claimed no accomplices and that he alone planned and executed every detail. Despite hours of searching his cell, no escape tools were found. He said the tools were disposed of long ago and refused to describe how.
Large crowds thronged streets as old year ended and 1913 began. Paraders rode and marched amid fireworks and banners. The celebration drew numerous families and residents to central avenues for a festive welcome.
Jesse, confined at Cherry Hill, spoke briefly during a yard walk after days of silence. He admitted planning an escape and said no accomplices aided him, insisting he acted alone after years of effort.
A member of William Fesshall and Co. at 21 Federal street shot himself in Arlington shortly after being placed under arrest on a ae charge. He asked the officer for time to bid his wife and children goodbye before the fatal act.
Marshall, a musical instrument seller, killed himself after being arrested on a $74.25 larceny warrant. He placed a revolver to his head in the den of his Arlington home as his wife urged him to hurry. He died at 12:27 a m. An autopsy will be held. the warrant’s issuer was not named.
A barn owned by John Waddle Jr on Oakdale Avenue in Fast Dedham burned last night. A horse owned by D E Smith of Dedham suffocated in the fire along with several carriages and sleighs.
Two hundred men and women crowded the Milk street corridor of the central post office to win the honor of sending the first parcel by parcels post. With midnight, Post master Mansfield struck a gong and the new federal service began.
Clerk Tibbetts sells an 8 cent stamp to I O Jackson of 3 Pinckney Street for a New Year parcel weighing over 83 pounds sent to Mayor John Fitzgerald. Jackson also pays 10 cents to insure. A second parcel for Fitzgerald contains baked beans and a box of candy bound for Riggs Street Gloucester. Parcels rush to Window 31 as Moran’s window opens briefly. Continued on Page 4-5.
Princeton New Jersey January 1 the first parcels post package delivered in New Jersey and likely the United States was left at the home of President elect Wilson at 1204 am. The Woodrow Wilson Club of Princeton sent a package of apples weighing 11 pounds the maximum allowed. Letter carrier David Gransom waited and rushed the delivery as Governor Wilson signed for the parcel and received a pencil. The Wilson family began their New Year with apples.
Hugo Reisinger of New York and Harvard University ties is appointed privy councillor by the Prince Regent of Bavaria. He is chairman of the visiting committee of the Germanic Museum and honorary commissioner to Europe for the St. Louis exposition.
John H. Lavin former clerk in Joseph Meacomb store and town treasurer of Saugus was arrested at North Adams on bigamy charges and turned over to Portland police Maine.
Police allege Lavin wed three women in rapid succession in Bellows Falls and Leominster before a 1912 Portland ceremony with Edith G. Cross. Cross, a Saugus grammar school teacher, reportedly learned of prior nuptials. Lavin then worked at a Leominster drug store.
Charles Warner of 361 Harrison avenue said a burglar stabbed him and fired at him during an attempted break in at a clothing store on 2075 Washington street late last night. Warner reported seeing a man break a plate glass window and trying to enter the building after 11 o clock.
A man grapples with a burglar at the corner of Washington and Sterling. The thief wounds Warner with a weapon, flees, fires three shots at him, but hits nothing. Patrolmen Gilman and Hartnett find the injured man, who is taken to an ambulance for treatment.
The cable from Charles S. Baxter confirms his support for Charles Baxter as a U S Senate candidate while in Russia, noting he cannot return before March 4. Boston welcomes 1913 with a 50 000 strong New Year Eve gathering on the Common and festive scenes across cafes and hotels as crowds celebrate and carriages fill the streets.
Baxter, acting chair of the association of Progressive Republicans, says inquiries from Republicans across the state prompt him to confirm Ambassador Guild’s candidacy for the United States Senatorship. He plans a meeting to decide on their next steps and a week-end statement is anticipated.
