Record of Exports From Port of Boston Shows Great Decrease
Boston's export trade over the last year declined sharply from 1901 records. Grain, cotton, cattle, fresh beef, hay, butter and lard fell, with apples and cheese as the main exceptions. Corn and oats shrank most, due to high prices from a short crop. Wheat and flour fell for different reasons. Shippers say Boston’s export boom for Western produce did not materialize. Grain exports are expected to rise in January, while cattle embargoes and ship owner losses persist. Fresh beef, butter, and lard shipments also dropped notably.
