State must ratify New Haven deal in Boston & Maine stock accord

The Massachusetts Legislature must ratify the terms of the agreement between the federal Department of Justice and the New Haven road for disposing of the Boston and Maine stock before the decree of trust can take effect. George W. Anderson of the Public Service Commission announced the development during his trip from Washington where he represented the state in DOJ-New Haven talks.

Fire causes smoke and fainting in building stairwell

A man unable to call the fire department due to a nickel slot phone delay found Mrs Jennie Pierce unconscious amid smoke. He and his wife carried her to the street where she revived. The fire began in an air shaft between the third and fourth floors, causing an estimated $6500 in damage. No panic occurred among residents.

Fire damages interior as flames escape from air shaft

The blaze started on an upper floor of a building owned by Mary Dobson. Occupants included Dr. Cc. W. Bush on the first floor Mrs. C. M. Bisbee on the second floor John D. McKay on the third floor and Mrs. A. F. Mellish on the fourth. Water from several hoses caused further damage to the suite below. Mrs Mellish believed no one was present when the fire began. Mrs J A Norris of 1 Cumberland street witnessed the alarm being raised after discovering the blaze on the roof and reporting it by telephone.
