President Wilson and his cabinet reaffirmed no change in policy toward Mexico after the execution of American citizen Clemente Vergara by Mexican federals. Edward Rantoul testified in a Massachusetts divorce case that Chester Chapin Rumrill, his college friend, deceived him by taking his wife Lois Burnett Rantoul. The drama unfolded in East Cambridge on the sixth day of the trial as Rantoul described threats of self harm and a ruined marriage.
In New York on February 27 a crowd of about 1000 unemployed men surged into the Second Avenue Baptist Church on Second Avenue near Tenth Street during prayer meeting. They demanded shelter, saying they had no homes or money. Pastor Pierce refused to admit them, guards cleared the street, and the sexton locked the door after police reserves were summoned.

Washington February 27 Ultimate Porto Rican independence is contemplated in a bill to provide a civil government for Porto Rico introduced today by Luis Munez Rivera resident commissioner from Porto Rico. The measure, he said, reflects the desires of the Porto Rican people and differs from prior proposals in Congress. It would provide Porto Rico with citizenship rather than making islanders U S citizens.
The Massachusetts Legislature must ratify the terms of the agreement between the federal Department of Justice and the New Haven road for disposing of the Boston and Maine stock before the decree of trust can take effect. George W. Anderson of the Public Service Commission announced the development during his trip from Washington where he represented the state in DOJ-New Haven talks.
The article notes Governor Walsh secured a clause allowing Massachusetts to seize Boston and Maine stock in the holding company on 30 days notice. Currently the state can take stock after one year. A man unable to call the fire department due to a nickel slot phone delay found Mrs Jennie Pierce unconscious amid smoke. He and his wife carried her to the street where she revived. The fire began in an air shaft between the third and fourth floors, causing an estimated $6500 in damage. No panic occurred among residents.
The blaze started on an upper floor of a building owned by Mary Dobson. Occupants included Dr. Cc. W. Bush on the first floor Mrs. C. M. Bisbee on the second floor John D. McKay on the third floor and Mrs. A. F. Mellish on the fourth. Water from several hoses caused further damage to the suite below. Mrs Mellish believed no one was present when the fire began. Mrs J A Norris of 1 Cumberland street witnessed the alarm being raised after discovering the blaze on the roof and reporting it by telephone.
