Paraguay Halt of War Shifts in South American Clash

Boston Post reports Paraguay halted operations as a rebellion centers the conflict. Brazil reforms its forces to 35,000 men with 10,000 more likely, advancing with an ironclad fleet from Curupay towards Humaita. Four ironclads joined the action in January and the outcome at Humaita remains awaited. Uruguay’s break from the alliance may now provoke reflection on consequences.

Boston Relief Plea Urges North to Aid Southern Suffering

The Boston Journal appeals to the public to extend relief to starving Southerners. It notes twenty thousand bushels of Indian corn shipped by the Southern Relief Commission and urges New England to contribute. It argues loyalty strengthens through humane aid and warns against letting the relief movement languish.

Reform in Parliament by Disraeli’s Tory Resolutions

The speech of Disraeli frames reform as a question of national need rather than party policy. The Liberals resist accepting the ministry as noncommittal, while Gladstone defends parliamentary principle that defeating a ministerial measure ends a government. The piece views the beclouded reform debate as lasting, substantial, and politically consequential.

Correction on Rev Dr Bolles testimony before committee

A correction notes the reporter misquoted Rev Dr Bolles claiming he denied drunkenness as a crime. The Doctor stated drunkenness is not the worst crime nor the fountain of all sin, and not as injurious as denying man’s accountability to God and a future judgment.
