In 1897 furniture houses offer unsold 1896 stock while noting 1896 was a presidential year. Confidence waned and trade slowed, but the dealer proclaims a strict rule against last year's styles and promises new inventories without hesitation.
The firm bets on a three day sale March 1 2 and 3 to reach 200000 in total sales. It claims no other maker could move such stock in three days at any price and assures a bona fide annual clearance with genuine stock sacrifice. No more than 8600 worth per purchaser. Sale starts 8 AM Monday with a complete catalogue available on request.
In Washington on February 2 the Senate debated Cuba policy with bitter exchanges led by Morgan Lodge and Frye. They assailed Spain and questioned administration secrecy over insults to the flag and citizens. The discussion touched on Sanguilly’s release and McKinley’s pending return, with contributions from Daniel Hale Gray White and others.
Two men were injured in separate street car incidents in Boston's West End. James Kingston of Brighton suffered a broken nose and bruises after an electric car hit his wagon at Brighton avenue and Allston street, while driver Timothy E Hickey of 6 Lewis place was knocked from his wagon near Tremont street and Union Park street when struck by car number 627. Both men received medical attention and were sent home.
The congressman defended due process and criticized the Sanguilly case. He claimed no pardon information reached the committee and accused the president of dodging duties to country and manhood. He asked to wash his hands of the matter before the Senate.
