House Debates Tobacco Tax Uniformity and Deficiency Bill

Mr Leech of North Carolina proposed suspending rules to adopt a resolution asserting a uniform tobacco tax of 16 cents per pound. Mr Dawes of Massachusetts warned it would remove about 16 million dollars from the Treasury. The motion failed 20 to 68. The discussion then moved to the deficiency bill.

Ice Crushes Two Vessels At St Louis Riverfront

Heavy ice swept down the Mississippi between 7 and 8 pm striking the steamer R. J. Lockwood at Red river wharf, crushing its starboard side. The Silver Bow was also struck, dragged from moorings, and sank near the channel. Minnie and the wharf boat were damaged. Lockwood and Silver Bow likely total wrecks. values and insured amounts noted, with Silver Bow carrying about 400 tons of cargo valued at 60 000. Ice originating from the Missouri River gorge.

Coal Fire at Colby Iron Works Threatens Lanesboro Plant

In Lanesboro Massachusetts February 26 a coal work fire at J L Colby’s iron works threatens 500000 bushels of charcoal. Engines from Pittsfield Albany and the city saved nearby property but wind may destroy the coal. Loss estimated at 75000 to 19000. In South Worcester Massachusetts February 26 an old Washburn Moon building used as a shoddy mill burned tonight. Loss on building about 2000 to 3900 with stock and machinery at 2000. insured.
