Republicans Clash Over New Postmaster and Collector
Washington reports conflict within the Republican ranks over filling federal posts in New York and nationwide. Multiple candidates seek the New York collectorship, including William H. Robertson and ex-Speaker James W. Husted, with others like Daniel Butterfield and Joel B. Erhardt in play. Postmaster Pearson faces non-reelection, while Collector Magone’s term remains long. The Oklahoma Territory faces strong opposition to its organization, and New Mexico, Wyoming, Idaho, and Arizona are deferred to future sessions as Republicans weigh territorial admissions and potential Democratic leanings.
